why xilinx will disrupt itself when new acap chip launches

xilinx (pronounced “zye-links”) is one of those funny-named, specialized companies that makes a cog in data center machinery that is important for efficiency’s sake but that is so melded into the infrastructure that it’s easy to be overlooked.the san jose, calif.-based chipmaker, which makes an item called a field-programmable gate array, or fpga for short, on march 19 announced a new product that it says will eventually supercede what its frontline product already does in an it system.it’s called an adaptive compute acceleration platform (acap), and xilinx claims this proprietary 7nm chip goes far beyond the capabilities of an fpga, which are already in wide use. it’s still vaporware at this point, however, with testing beginning later this year.setting a context for the changeoverfurther

synthego’s genetic toolkit aims to make crispr more accessible

we hear a lot about the potential and implications of the gene-editing technique crispr, but it’s not like just anyone can open up an app, pick a gene they don’t like, and build the molecular machinery needed to snip it out. that’s the goal, though, and synthego is one of the companies pursuing it by creating a sort of ready-made crispr sandbox to start new researchers off.“80 percent of users getting into crispr have never done genetic engineering at all. so we simplified the process,” said synthego founder paul dabrowski on stage at disrupt today. “it’s a beautiful interface… but there’s a lot of heavy lifting in the background.”if you want to use crispr, you need the genome of the animal you want to use, the dna code gene you’re targeting, and a corresponding piece of rna that leads the

factgem wants to help businesses get more value out of their data

factgem, which is launching in our disrupt new york battlefield competition today, was born out of megan kvamme‘s frustration with trying to juggle hundreds of excel spreadsheets — and the data in them — while she was working as an investment banker. when she tried to find a software product that would allow her to more easily analyze all of this data, she couldn’t find what she was looking for, so she started working on what would later become factgem back in 2011.“people said ‘no,’ that’s a hard problem. you can’t do that,” kvamme recalled, and later added that what she wanted to build was essentially a bloomberg terminal for data. shortly after she started exploring the space, she met clark richey, now factgem’s cto, who has an extensive background in working with databases at marklogic
