eden prairie last week swore in its newest police officer — and the first somali-american to wear its uniform.after nearly two years as a community service officer in the department, mohamoud "momo" ibrahim was welcomed to the west metro city's police ranks. ibrahim, who serves in the army reserve and has a law enforcement degree from inver hills community college, was born in somalia, moved to egypt and has lived in minnesota since he was 9 years old."we want to be reflective of the community we serve," captain greg weber said. police found a 67-year-old eden prairie man drowned thursday evening after a family friend went to check on him near his bob lake property in northeastern minnesota and reported him missing.the friend located a submerged canoe about 40 feet from the dock, where the carlton county sheriff's office found the man's dog, according to a news release.police found the man's body shortly afterward.the man's identity has not been released.jessie bekker

man, woman found dead in eden prairie home in possible double homicide


eden prairie police are investigating the deaths of a man and woman found dead in their home as a possible double homicide.police were called to the 6000 block of woodhill trail about 7:20 a.m. thursday to conduct a welfare check on a man who failed to report for work. inside the home, officers discovered the bodies. there were no other occupants in the home when police arrived.the eden prairie police department, with help from the hennepin county crime lab, is investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths. the hennepin county medical examiner will determine the official cause of death and identity of the victims.police say they don’t believe the incident was random, but didn’t say whether they are searching for a suspect.david chanen

the eden prairie outdoor center, a refurbished cabin that serves as an environmental education space, is making a hoot about its newest member: a male barred owl who’s in need of a name.the city of eden prairie published a facebook post about the bird on wednesday, asking people to leave their name suggestions in the comments.the owl was found injured outside chicago and could not be released back into the wild. the outdoor center, home to about 25 animals, acquired him in early december, tekiela said.“we are an environmental education center, and we use this bird for education,” he said. “we do educational programs to teach people about wildlife through animal amb adors.”barred owls, also known as hoot owls, are found across north america. this particular one is fairly large, with a yello

judy baxter’s summer is going to be much like her fall and winter. the eden prairie girls’ lacrosse co-head coach (with beth patterson) is an unfaltering lacrosse booster, whether she’s coaching, coordinating, promoting or just simply talking passionately about the sport she loves.having just helped lead eden prairie to its third consecutive state championship, baxter is the director of coaching and recruiting for the minnesota elite girls’ lacrosse club program. she oversees the coaching for the state’s top club lacrosse team — and does a little coaching herself — and travels the country on weekends, promoting minnesota lacrosse players to college coaches.“we haven’t leveled off,” baxter said. “we are still attracting athletes. there’s still a lot of growth and so much excitement about th
