if there's one certainty in a baseball game matching nine-time city section champion el camino real against nine-time city section champion chatsworth, it's that there will be no lacking in drama.it happened again on monday in woodland hills in a west valley league opener. el camino real was clinging to a 1-0 lead going into the top of the seventh.pitcher elan filous kept escaping jams. he got a strikeout in the fifth with a runner at third and two out. he struck out two and got a flyout with the bases loaded and none out in the sixth.but in the seventh, facing the best chatsworth hitter, all-city catcher daniel zakosek, filous threw a fastball on a 1-0 count and zakosek sent it flying over the right-field fence for a three-run home run to help chatsworth come away with a 4-1 victory."he t

chad beeten has resigned as basketball coach at crossroads, the school announced on wednesday.he was in his first season, and crossroads is scheduled to participate in the state playoffs next week. beeten did not coach in an open division consolation game last week against redondo.in an email from sara ring, the school's communications director, the statement reads, “chad beeten has resigned from crossroads school for arts & sciences. chad served as the boys’ varsity basketball coach, a college athletics recruiting specialist and a physical education instructor."crossroads would like to thank chad for his work on behalf of the school and wishes him well in his future endeavors. assistant coach danny marakovits is serving as interim head coach of the boys’ varsity basketball team for the re

baseball: keeping track of pitches has begun


this past weekend marked the beginning of the new state rule restricting the number of pitches players can throw in a game and required active participation of teams in keeping track of pitch counts.in the city section, teams have begun posting pitch counts on maxpreps.com. teams are supposed to consult after each half inning to make sure they have the same counts.southern section teams are on their own in keeping track of pitch counts. harvard-westlake is using a volleyball counter that will be displayed near its protective screen behind home plate (see above) so everyone knows.for the latest on high school sports, follow @latsondheimer on twitter

huntington beach, calif. — the latest on a man shot by police after reportedly chasing children at a southern california sports complex (all times local):7:19 a.m.authorities have identified the man killed by police in front of a crowd of families after he reportedly was chasing children at a sports complex in southern california.the orange county coroner division says 29-year-old steven schiltz of huntington beach died thursday evening at an artificial turf field at the complex.the shooting is being investigated by the orange county sheriff's department.police say there were about 200 people at the complex during the incident in huntington beach.___6:44 a.m.a man reportedly chasing children around a southern california sports complex was shot and killed by two police officers.huntington b

fans and sportswriters should offer the southern section a standing ovation, because officials confirmed on friday they have agreed to have an open division doubleheader semifinal on friday, feb. 24, at usc's galen center.to pull it off, the southern section had to make a financial commitment without knowing which four teams would reach the semifinals.but there is so much interest this season in the possibility of sierra canyon, chino hills, bishop montgomery and santa ana mater dei reaching the semifinals that the southern section decided to take the risk.semifinal games have been played in the past at individual high schools or neutral sites. but chino hills has been attracting large crowds for the last two seasons, filling up sites, so having the semifinals at galen center if chino hill
