ultimate travel kit - thailand with olympus' e-m1 ii & 25mm prime lens: digital

introductionwhen i travel, i always bring a dedicated era with me. my preferred form of 'travel p og hy,' at least when taking pictures for myself, is to document my experiences and create a visual diary. i like to travel as light as i can while still being able to come back with results of decent quality (though a personal trip to iceland with a d810 was a notable exception to the notion of traveling light).so, what would i bring for a planned personal trip to thailand? my d700's are solid but a bit bulky, and i'm not entirely sure how my original x100 would stand up to high humidity, beaches and possibly a rain shower or two (understatement of the year, as i'll get to in a bit). i considered the ni d500 or the pentax k-3 ii, but both are also fairly bulky, though i was still hoping to en

throwback thursday: the olympus c-2100uz: digital photography review

even in 2000, the olympus c-2100uz's 2mp sensor was a bit behind the times. plenty of other cameras offered 3mp sensors, but what the c-2100uz lacked in resolution it sought to make up with a huge (at the time) 10x stabilized zoom. that 38-380mm equiv. f2.8-3.5 lens was matched with a full slate of manual exposure controls, built-in evf and a focus assist lamp that 'actually works'. the c-2100uz shared a lot of features with the c-2020z on which it was based, which offered a 35-105mm equiv. f2-2.8 zoom. shared features included a 1.8" 114k-dot rear lcd, which site founder phil askey noted was in sore need of an anti-reflective coating.the lens was obviously the c-2100's biggest selling point. at the time, the only other 'compacts' to offer a lens this long were sony's floppy disk-based mav

fotodiox pro launches five gfx lens adapters: digital photography review

fotodiox pro has launched five new lens adapters for the forthcoming fujifilm gfx medium-format system. this will allow lenses from other systems to be used with the gfx 50s, though as fotodiox's website points out, not every lens will give great results. all tilt-shift lenses and many full-frame lenses longer than 50mm will cover the gfx's sensor, but anything wider will produce vignetting.the new lineup features adapters for the canon ef-mount, nikon f-mount, olympus om-mount, mamiya 645, and contax. the adapters are priced at $150 with the exception of the mamiya 645, which is priced at $170.the adapters are made entirely from metal with chrome-plated brass mounts and a 'precise fit and solid connection.' the company also says it uses 'enhanced craftsmanship and high-tolerance construct

cp+ 2017: ricoh teases upcoming d fa* 50mm f1.4: digital photography review

ricoh has added two prime lenses to its full-frame lens roadmap for the pentax k-1: the forthcoming d fa* 50mm f1.4 and 85mm f1.4. although details are scant, we did sneak a peek at the 50mm, which was showcased in a plexiglass box on the show floor.here it is - the forthcoming d fa* 50mm f1.4 'reference lens'. if you look closely at the gold ring on the lens barrel, a strip of tape has been used to cover up some lettering, after the lens name. we wonder whether it conceals 'wr'. we'd expect flagship primes to be weather-sealed, but it's possible that this aspect of the specification has yet to be finalized.

fujifilm updates x-mount lens roadmap: digital photography review

fujifilm's creation of cine lenses and a medium-format system doesn't mean it's forgotten its stills-shooting x-mount audience. the company has announced an updated lens roadmap, adding an ultra-wide zoom and a telephoto prime lens, both due in 2018.the updated roadmap positions the 'ultra wide angle zoom' fractionally to the left of the existing 10-24mm f4 r ois (15-36mm equiv), suggesting it's likely to cover a similar range but presumably with a different aperture value. meanwhile, the 'telephoto prime' lens seems pinned around the 200mm (300 equiv) point.the x-mount versions of the mk cine zooms are also added to the roadmap, joining the 80mm f2.8 r lm ois wr macro as being expected in 2017. the latest version of the fujifilm x-mount lens roadmap can be found here.

olympus plans autofocus, stabilization improvements for flagship e-m1 mark ii

why it matters to you early adopters of olympus’ new flagship era can rest ured that it is only going to get better from here on out.when it comes to image stabilization and autofocus performance, olympus’ om-d e-m1 mark ii is no slouch. the $2,000 flagship mirrorless era is a technological tour de force, and counts 4k video and an impressive 60 fps continuous shooting mode among its key features.that was enough to earn a digital trends editor’s choice award, but apparently olympus engineers think they can do even better, revealing that improvements to both stabilization and autofocus, among other things, could be coming via future firmware updates.“our [image stabilization] is becoming very, very sensitive. but we are not isfied with the current performance and will continue to improve i

the newly announced sigma 14mm f1.8 dg hsm art has the low light shooters on our staff all excited. super-wide lenses with such fast maximum apertures are rare, and we've got high hopes for one with sigma's 'art' designation. we jumped all over the chance to take a pre-production version of the lens out for a spin in yokohama, japan during cp+ 2017. we're looking forward to spending more time with the lens, but for now here are some initial samples. see our sigma 14mm f1.8 dg hsm art pre-production samplesplease note that all samples in this gallery were taken with a pre-production lens

kamerar lens zoom kit for iphone 7 plus review: digital photography review

kamerar zoom lens kit for iphone 7 plus reviewif you're shopping for accessory lenses, for most iphone models the choice can be overwhelming. the lenses on offer range from cheap plastic variants for very little money to hefty high-quality glass in metal bodies that require a three-figure investment. however, the situation is slightly different for apple's current flagship, the iphone 7 plus. because of the unique design of its dual-camera there are currently still very few attachment lenses on the market. that said, we've had a chance to have a closer look at one of the first available options, the kamerar zoom lens kit. for $50 the kit includes a protective case for the iphone, two lens modules that slide into the case and two small protective lens-cases. the first module combines a fish

first look: fujinon mk18-55mm t2.9 cine lens: digital photography review

the new fujinon mk18-55mm t2.9 cine lens is the first of the company's new line of 'mk' series fujinon lenses aimed at the 'emerging production' market. these lenses are designed to meet the needs of cinematographers who require features generally found on cinema lenses, who often work in the super 35 format, and can't justify the cost of lenses costing tens of thousands of dollars more than their cameras.according to fujifilm, the mk lenses are basically a smaller version of its cabrio series of cinema lenses, which typically cost $20,000 or more. the two lens lines share the same coatings and general mechanical design for moving lenses and groups. between the 18-55mm and the already-announced mk50-135mm lens, the mk line covers the very useful 18-135mm range for super 35 shooters.perhaps

throwback thursday: the canon ef 24-70mm f2.8l: digital photography review

this week the sigma 'art' line gained a lens many had been clamoring for: a 24-70mm f2.8 zoom, which nowadays seems a required lens for many professional shooters. while sigma did make the first ever 24-70 f2.8 in 2001, this week we go back to the lens that helped the idea catch on: the canon 24-70mm f2.8l.look across all camera systems and you'll find that they all offer some sort of constant aperture 24-70mm or 'normal' zoom equivalent that covers this range. there's a good reason for it. this zoom range covers the wide area and the mild telephoto area, rather than all wide or all tele. it's a flexible range, and appeals to photographers of many different disciplines.the odd thing is, the 24-70 is only 16 years old. sigma did it first, and then in 2002 canon's very first 24-70, the f2.8l
