as the first and only supermoon of 2017 rose high into the sky this sunday (dec. 3), astrophotographers seized the opportunity to shoot the moon in all its bigger-than-usual glory. a supermoon occurs when the moon's closest approach to earth in its elliptical orbit happens around the same time that the moon is full. sunday's supermoon reached its fullest phase at 10:47 a.m. est (1547 gmt), but the moon didn't actually reach perigee — the point closest to earth – until about 17 hours later. new york city-based astrophotographer gowrishakhar ("gowri") lakshminarayanan captured both these images of the supermoon on dec. 3, 2017, and a regular full moon in july, then created this infographic to compare the difference in size side by side. credit: gowrishankar l. with the moon approaching perig

are 'supermoons' really that super?

on this first day of 2018, at 5 p.m. est (2200 gmt), the january full moon will arrive at perigee, its closest point to earth in an orbit. today, our lunar companion reaches an extreme perigee distance of 221,559 miles (356,565 kilometers). when these events coincide (a full moon at perigee), some people refer to the event as a "supermoon." this will be the "biggest full moon of 2018," and the difference in the moon's apparent size, compared with when it is positioned at its average distance from earth, will be 7.3 percent. but that variation is not readily apparent to observers who are viewing the moon directly. and then there is the other facet: the oft-cited statistic that the perigee full moon is 30 percent brighter than a "normal" full moon. but that translates to only a 0.1 or 0.2 ma

observing the fascinating full moon using mobile apps: part 2 — supermoon

this weekend's full moon, traditionally known as the oak moon, cold moon, long nights moon and the moon before yule, occurs less than one day before perigee, the point in the moon's orbit when it is closest to earth — making this full moon the largest and brightest supermoon for 2017. with the moon 7 percent larger than average, there's no better time to take a closer look at the moon.  in part 1 of full moon mobile astronomy, we discussed using unaided eyes and binoculars to see the large-scale surface geology of the moon. in part ii, we'll cover what to look at with your telescope, and offer some tips for making the most of observing the full moon. we'll highlight the best mobile apps for finding lunar features. and if you enjoy sharing your enthusiasm for astronomy with school groups or

not-so-super (new) moon coming next week

next thursday (may 25) brings us the moon that will come closest to the earth in 2017.   this information may bring to mind the term "supermoon," branding invented some years ago by an astrologer. when the moon arrives at that point in its orbit closest to the earth (known as perigee) and also is at or near the full phase, the media immediately hypes it as a "special event" and urges the public to head outside to gaze upon a moon that will appear 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than normal.   but if the media said nothing about the closeness of the moon, most folks would probably not notice anything unusual about it. [the stealth new moon supermoon explained (video)] still, armed with that knowledge, those same casual observers suddenly look upon the moon in a completely new ligh

slooh airing 'supermoon' show sunday: watch it live online

the astronomy broadcasting service slooh will air a special supermoon webcast sunday (dec. 3), starting at 9 p.m. est (0200 gmt on monday, dec. 4). you can watch it live at slooh's website or here at space.com, courtesy of slooh. the show celebrates this month's full moon, which coincides with the natural satellite's closest pass by earth during its elliptical orbit around our planet. such "supermoons" appear about 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than "minimoons," which occur when the object reaches full phase at or near its most distant point from earth. [supermoon 2017 guide: when and how to see it] "the intense luminosity of a full moon illuminates an inky night sky just enough to let a little healthy mischief creep in," slooh representatives wrote in a statement. "think of th

'pink moon' rises this week

the april full moon will rise this week on tuesday (april 11), reaching its fullest phase late at night, just after the bars close in most cities on the u.s. east coast. april's full moon is known as the pink moon, but don't expect it to look particularly pink. it is named after pink flowers called wild ground phlox, which bloom in early spring and become widespread throughout the u.s. and canada this time of year. technically, the full phase — when the moon is on the exact opposite side of the earth as the sun — happens at 2:08 a.m. edt (0608 gmt). for skywatchers on the west coast, the moon will reach peak fullness at 11:08 p.m. pdt on monday (april 10). that said, the moon will appear full to casual observers everywhere from april 10 to april 12. for northern hemisphere observers along
