good vibrations! nasa launch simulation tests megarocket experience

launch conditions are never easy so engineers at nasa's johnson space center in houston have already begun simulations of the first crewed launch of the orion spacecraft on the agency's new megarocket, the space launch system (sls). inside a jsc lab this month, nasa's human factor engineers combined the many aspects of an orion-sls launch for the first time. during the tests, subjects wore modified versions of the a nced crew escape suits future orion astronauts will wear, and in the latest seat design for the spacecraft in order to experience what a launch might be like. a japanese space junk removal experiment has failed in orbit

an experimental space junk "collector" has glitched during its first orbital test. the system, designed by the japanese space agency (jaxa) and a fishing net company, should have unfurled a 700-meter (2,300 ft) tether from a space station resupply vehicle that was returning to earth. according to jaxa scientists, however, the system appears to have faltered. space junk is a growing problem in low-earth orbit. since the beginning of the space age, debris as small as flecks of paint and as large as whole ellites and parts of rocket boosters have been accumulating and it is estimated that over 100 million individual pieces of junk (tens of thousands of pieces that are over 10 centimeters in size) are whizzing around our planet. although space is big, and the likelihood of an astronaut and/or

nasa touches down at super bowl festival

it's almost time for the 2017 super bowl, and visitors to the game's host city of houston should make their way to discovery green in the city's downtown starting tomorrow (jan. 28). there, they'll find a very special space-centric experience.  houston is, of course, home to nasa's johnson space center, so it was fitting that nasa and various private spaceflight companies should contribute to super bowl live, the nine-day festival starting urday (jan. 28) that will lead up to the big game. the primary attraction of the festival is a mars-themed ride called "future flight," which takes riders on a trip to mars and back using virtual reality goggles on a 90-foot (27 meters) drop-tower ride.  in general, the mix of space and football will be strong in houston this coming week. meanwhile, up

space gifts 2017 - the best gift ideas in the universe

buy the expanse: season 1 [blu-ray] on amazon.combased on the idly-growing series of books, this space opera on syfy channel is where they've been putting their special effects budget. the show offers action, political intrigue and a solar-system-wide conspiracy that threatens to send earth, mars and the asteroid belt spiraling into war. space.com talked with the book's authors here about science and effects on the show, which they were heavily involved in, here ($24 on amazon).why we love it: catch up just in time for season 2, slated for early 2017. and the books are coming out every year or so, so there's no chance the show will overtake them and have to introduce needless side plots!next: an astronaut's wild ride

'astronauts' start 8-month mars simulation in hawaii

another long-term space simulation is underway at the mauna loa volcano in hawaii, where six crewmembers entered a small, isolated dome jan. 19 as a part of the hi-seas mission. this is the fifth iteration of hi-seas, also known as the hawai'i space exploration analog and simulation. nasa is funding this mission and a sixth mission, scheduled for 2018, for $1 million. for the next eight months, crewmembers will simulate a mission on a planetary surface similar to mars'. the simulation will include a 20-minute delay in communication, because it takes time to send messages at light speed from earth to mars, and they will have limited contact with the outside world — in previous missions, water was delivered every six weeks and supply "missions" every few months. the crew will also be expec

don't ask why cats populate this 'expanse' recap video — just enjoy

why does this recap of "the expanse" season 1 star a variety of costumed, floating, ship-flying cats on elaborate, tiny sets? space.com has no idea, but is certainly not complaining. in what syfy has called a "recat," a very serious new video walks viewers through the space adventure's first season, including cat-based overviews of the three conflicting factions: earth, mars and the asteroid belt. the video also presents feline alter egos of the show's main characters, including detective miller, james holden, chrisjen avasarala and julie mao (called julie "meow" here), whose disappearance kicks off the season's events. the video runs through a full season of plot, providing a good catch-up before the premiere of season 2 on wednesday (feb. 1). the show airs on syfy at 10 p.m. est (9 p.m.

spacex delays first flight from nasa shuttle launch pad

spacex on sunday bumped this week's planned launch of an echostar communications ellite until after a mid-february cargo run to the international space station for nasa, saying it needs more time to get its new launch pad ready. spacex, owned and operated by technology entrepreneur elon musk, is leasing the historic launch complex 39a from nasa to fly its falcon 9 and planned falcon heavy rockets. the pad was last used by nasa's space shuttles in 2011 and previously by the apollo program moon rockets. pad 39a is located at kennedy space center in florida, just north of what had been spacex's primary launch site at cape canaveral air force station. the cape canaveral pad was heavily damaged on sept 1 when a falcon 9 rocket burst into flames during a routine preflight test.  after the accid

japanese craft leaves space station to conduct space-junk experiment

a japanese cargo ship undocked from the international space station today (jan. 27) and will spend the next week doing a science experiment in orbit before burning up in earth's atmosphere on super bowl sunday (feb. 5). htv-6, also known as kounotori 6, is japan's sixth cargo resupply mission to the space station. it arrived at the orbiting lab in december with nearly 5 tons of supplies, including food, water, science gear, spare parts and christmas gifts for the crewmembers. it also brought along new lithium-ion batteries for a major power upgrade that took two spacewalks and weeks of robotic work to complete. after spending seven weeks docked to the space station's harmony module, the uncrewed cargo ship was sent away to eventually burn up in earth's atmosphere along with a few tons of

nils holger moormann designed the kammerspiel to help with small spaces

tiny newfound asteroid gives earth a close shave

an asteroid the size of a pickup truck narrowly missed earth late last night (jan. 29), just hours after scientists first spotted the space rock. the near-earth asteroid, known as 2017 bh30, zoomed within 32,200 miles (51,820 kilometers) of the planet, about 13 percent the distance from earth to the moon. closest approach occurred at 11:59 p.m. est last night (0459 gmt today, jan. 30), according to astronomers with the minor planet center in bridge, m achusetts. the 2017 bh30 object is about 19 feet (5.8 meters) wide, said scientists at nasa's jet propulsion laboratory in pasadena, california. space rocks of this size pose no appreciable threat to earth or its inhabitants, researchers have said. spaceworks stasis tech may make long-term space travel possible

why it matters to you long-term stasis is a crucial step toward making deep-space travel possible.a process traditionally used to treat cardiac arrest or traumatic brain injury is now showing promise as a possible method to enable long-term space travel through hibernation. behind this effort is john a. bradford, president of spaceworks, and making this a reality is much closer than you might think.doctors refer to this strategy as something called “the utic hypothermia.” essentially, the body is cooled slowly to a temperature between 32 and 34 degrees celsius (normal body temperature is 37c). this will slow down both heart rate and blood pressure, giving doctors additional time to work on serious health issues.more:as billionaires ogle mars, the space race is back onthe patient stays in
