parking business is booming for manitou incline friendly neighbor – the denver p

at 8:30 a.m. on a cloudy tuesday, business is booming for brian ratterree.one after another, he greets people bound for the manitou incline, people who have filled the lot here at the iron springs chateau, across the street from one of the region’s most in-demand trails.the stair stepper stretching a mile up the mountain at the end of ruxton avenue has, in turn, created a rather controversial demand for parking. heading into summer, the options in this dense canyon beside this congested tourist town are fewer and more expensive than ever.but ratterree is here to provide.“wassup, man?” the chateau’s long-haired part owner says to one hiker, stepping out of his car to pay $5 for as long as he wants – compared with the weekday fee of $10 an hour on the avenue’s meters.read the rest of this st

marijuana tax money lets manitou springs fix potholes, bankroll bigger improveme

in advocating “pot for potholes,” recreational marijuana proponents promised a potent new revenue source for tackling a familiar urban headache.but in manitou springs, the only pikes peak region community so far to permit recreational pot shops, the cash infusion has meant more than road repairs.just more than two years after manitou opened the first of its two retail pot stores, community leaders credit a booming pot trade for driving a resurgence in the city’s finances. the tax money has helped double manitou’s general fund after back-to-back natural disasters, bankrolled long-hoped-for improvements in its gritty eastern corridor and eased the financial path toward preparing for future disasters.“that all came about because of marijuana,” said marcy morrison, a longtime manitou resident

brutal conditions challenge workers on manitou incline

colorado springs, colo. (ap) — with both feet planted firmly so as not to slip and tumble down into the clouds, hugo benitez glanced over his shoulder, down to the shrouded ties and water-diverting structures that he and his team installed during two previous jobs on the manitou incline.“we never thought we would be here,” he said atop the region’s most popular trail. “we never thought down there that we’d be up here.”the task loomed above the false summit they saw from their lower stations in 2014 and 2016. now they’re above that hump, here at the highest reaches of the famous stair-stepper where hikers have always navigated loose soil on eroded slopes and broken ties around cracked culverts.the smell of mixed dirt hung thick on the thin air as eight men in hard hats worked through anothe

manitou springs – doughnuts and i enjoy a special relationship. as a kid, wednesday’s lunch was always a dozen doughnuts. at the office, i loved staff meetings because the boss brought doughnuts, and i still drive from aurora to thornton for haircuts because there’s a krispy kreme nearby.but don’t tell my wife, the nurse. she hates doughnuts.more specifically, she hates me eating doughnuts, insisting they’re destructive to my health and waistline. that’s why i neglected to tell her the real reason for our winter ascent of pike’s peak.during january and february, the manitou & pikes peak cog railway trains only go two-thirds of the way up the mountain. come march, weather permitting, they travel all the way to the summit.  i booked tickets for the season’s first trip to the top.unlike norma

washington (ap) — president donald trump says his halt to immigration from seven muslim-majority nations and ban on refugees is being done in the name of national security. but it’s not clear that these measures will help prevent attacks on american soil, and they could wind up emboldening extremists who already view the u.s. as at war with islam.the list of countries does not include saudi arabia, where the majority of the sept. 11 hijackers were from, and recent high-profile acts of deadly extremist violence have been carried out either by u.s. citizens or by individuals whose families weren’t from the nations singled out.the admissions ban announced friday also does not directly address a more urgent law enforcement concern: homegrown violent extremists already in the united states who
