anchorage, alaska -- a trial date has been set for a 21-year-old alaska man accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend when he tried to kill himself and the bullet struck the woman after passing through his head. victor sibson wore a helmet during his brief appearance in court tuesday. he was scheduled for an aug. 21 trial. sibson has pleaded not guilty to a charge of second-degree murder in the april 19 death of brittany-mae haag after she was shot at the couple's anchorage apartment. members of both their families attend tuesday's court hearing. victor sibson is accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend during a suicide attempt.  ktva "i was hurt because victor has been part of our family. he called me mom," haag's mother, sheila lopez, told cbs affilate ktva. anchorage, alaska -- one person was killed and seven others hospitalized after a dangerously high level of carbon monoxide built up in the garage of an anchorage home monday. the buildup appears to be caused by a boiler in the garage, according to anchorage police department, spokesperson renee oistad, cbs affiliate ktva reports. police say 18-year-old trevor noble died in the incident. firefighters and police shortly before 8:30 a.m. monday responded to a report of a death at a home in south anchorage. firefighters determined the home had a carbon monoxide issue. in an interview tuesday with ktva, lt. john mckinnon said the origin of the carbon monoxide was the home’s furnace system, which was located in the garage. mckinnon confirmed noble had been sleeping above the garage. “at this poi

juneau, alaska -- the u.s. coast guard in alaska is searching for a fishing boat with six people on board missing in the bering sea.ships and aircraft are looking for the 98-foot-long f/v destination, according to a news release from the agency on sunday afternoon. the boat is owned by a company based in seattle, petty officer 3rd class lauren steenson said.brent paine, executive director of the seattle-based united catcher boats, said there are two vessels that fish off alaska called the f/v destination.one of them is a trawler that belongs to his association, and is not the one that went missing. paine said the other vessel - the target of the coast guard search - is a smaller vessel that has harvested crab. that vessel had been moored in sand point, alaska, he said.paine said he doesn’t

pleasant valley, alaska -- the alaska earthquake information center says a magnitude 3.8 earthquake hit the central part of the state on sunday -- the fourth to hit alaska over the weekend.  the center says the earthquake had an epicenter 27 miles north of pleasant valley, a town of about 700 residents at 9:09 p.m. local time. the earthquake had a depth of 6.8 miles.there were no reports of injuries or damage. earlier sunday, a magnitude 3.6 earthquake hit the cook inlet region at 11:58 a.m. near tyonek, a town of about 200 residents. the earthquake had a depth of about 6 miles.on saturday, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck in the kenai peninsula region at 8:25 p.m. the alaska earthquake center said the quake was about 40 miles deep and described it as a "typical slab event," cbs anchorage

prosecutor: bullet meant for suicide killed another person


anchorage, alaska — alaska authorities found one shell casing after a man tried to shoot and kill himself but the bullet passed through his head and took the life of his girlfriend, a prosecutor said monday.victor sibson survived the shooting and was charged with second-degree murder in the april 19 fatal shooting of 22-year-old brittanymae haag at the couple's anchorage apartment.sibson and haag were hospitalized after the shooting. haag died the same day.at the hospital, sibson's blood alcohol level registered at three times the legal limit, according to assistant district attorney james fayette. sibson told investigators that he couldn't remember the mechanics of the shooting, fayette said.only one casing was found at the scene, and the bullet was recovered from haag's chest during her
