ucla in the nfl: packers' rodgers knocked out of game by vikings' barr, bringing

packers quarterback aaron rodgers was knocked out of a game against the vikings in the first quarter after taking a hit from vikings linebacker anthony barr. the hit sent rodgers to the sideline medical tent and brought a familiar face to barr out onto the field: quarterback brett hundley.they were teammates at ucla from 2012 to 2013.rodgers was ultimately carted off the field. the packers announced his return was questionable with a right shoulder injury.hundley has appeared in five games for the packers since they took him in the fifth round of the 2016 draft. he completed two of 10 attempts for 17 yards in four games as a rookie. he completed one pass for no gain against the bears earlier this season.the packers opted to run the ball three times before asking hundley to put the ball in

nick hundley getting quick study of giants' staff with posey at wbc

surprise, ariz. — it’s a wonderful thing for the giants that buster posey is playing in the world baseball classic. it may be even more wonderful for nick hundley that posey’s off at the wbc doing his patriotic thing.the giants’ new no. 2 catcher has been getting almost all of posey’s no. 1 duty since he departed march 6, and it’s allowed hundley to accelerate his knowledge and comfort level with the pitching staff, particularly the starting rotation.hundley has already caught madison bumgarner three times, matt cain and matt moore twice, debuted with johnny cueto on saturday and finally completed his first round with the starting staff by catching jeff samardzija monday night against the texas rangers.hundley has also re-familiarized himself with closer mark melancon, whom he hadn’t caugh

giants catcher nick hundley honored with willie mac award

san francisco – the willie mac award is bestowed on the giants player who most inspires the clubhouse with his positive attitude, tireless work ethic and performance on the field.this year, being inspirational was an impossible task. but nick hundley managed it well, and the giants honored their backup catcher with their highest honor prior to friday night’s game against the san diego padres.if true character emerges in times of struggle, hundley showed his stripes time and time again this season.“it’s somebody that inspires everybody else,” giants manager bruce bochy said. “it’s an honor when you look back at who’s won it. how they come to the park, their attitude, how they play the game, the type of teammate they are – it all goes into it.“the person who wins it every year is very well t

nfl notes: brett hundley says he's calm and confident in wake of aaron rodgers'

brett hundley is getting more reps at green bay packers practice and answering a lot more questions from reporters in the locker room. life has changed for hundley since starting quarterback aaron rodgers went down with a right collarbone injury.hundley is preparing to make his first career nfl start on sunday against new orleans. he is projecting a calm, confident attitude at a time when the packers must adjust quickly to life without their two-time nfl mvp.“i've got a lot of support from the guys from the team, from the community,” hundley said wednesday after practice.life “has changed a lot, but i've been praying a lot, understanding it's just football. i feel calm, i feel confident, and i feel ready.”this may not be how the third-year veteran out of ucla envisioned getting his first s

hundley, cueto lead giants past diamondbacks

phoenix — nick hundley didn't figure to play a lot this season as the san francisco giants' backup catcher. with star buster posey seeing more action at first base, hundley is closing in on 100 games played.the veteran backstop took advantage monday, hitting a three-run homer and helping guide starter johnny cueto through an unfamiliar lineup in the giants' 9-2 win over the arizona diamondbacks.arizona sat most of its regulars a day after clinching the top nl wild card."it's not surprising. coming in today i was really interested to see what their lineup would be," hundley said. "he (cueto) was battling his mechanics a little bit early, but man, as the game went on he got stronger and crisper. he threw some really dynamite changeups. his slider got better. as a true pro he made some really

packers coach angrily swats question about colin kaepernick replacing injured aa

mike mccarthy had to have known he was going to be asked about colin kaepernick the day after the green bay packers lost superstar quarterback aaron rodgers, possibly for the season.but that didn’t make the packers coach any happier to receive the question about the controversial former san francisco 49ers quarterback when it did come.during a news conference monday, mccarthy told reporters about the faith he has in the next players in line at the quarterback position, despite the tiny amount of nfl experience between the two of them.“i’ve got three years invested in brett hundley, i’ve got great confidence in brett hundley, i’ve got two years invested in joe callahan,” mccarthy said. “it’s a quarterback room that has structure and has a philosophy behind the development of it.”then came t

hundley homers in 10th as giants top cards 2-1

san francisco — nick hundley made the most of a summer heat wave with one big swing.hundley hit a game-ending homer in the 10th inning, and the giants beat the st. louis cardinals 2-1 on saturday despite a stellar pitching performance from lance lynn."good thing it was a warm day," hundley said. "i think earlier in the year it was windy and cold, maybe it doesn't go out. i'm not complaining about that."the game-time temperature of 95 degrees was the third highest at at&t park and just the sixth that topped 90 degrees. hundley led off the 10th with an opposite-field drive to right on a 1-0 slider from ryan sherriff (0-1) for his sixth homer of the season."he's got good power," giants manager bruce bochy said. "when he hit it, i thought it was going out. i've seen him do it before."the cardi

nick hundley's home run lifts giants over arizona

phoenix – they’ve been sprinkled into postgame interviews, mentioned in passing, added as an afterthought in response to a question on another topic.“and you, know…” a giants pitcher will say, as a prelude to complimenting backup catcher nick hundley.in a season when every plan burned faster than prairie grass, hundley has done what the giants projected when they signed him to a one-year, $2 million contract in february. he brainstormed with pitchers about approach and pitch selection. and his presence allowed manager bruce bochy to rest buster posey without sacrificing experience behind the plate. and he provided an occasional slosh of right-handed power on a team in perpetual drought of it.hundley’s three-run home run in the fourth inning backed johnny cueto in the giants’ 9-2 victory ov

nick hundley slam helps giants complete bay bridge sweep of a's

oakland — new backup catcher nick hundley crushed a grand slam and justin ruggiano hit a two-run shot as the giants completed a three-game sweep of the bay bridge series saturday with a 6-3 victory over the a’s at the coliseum.on a day when the giants gave several starters the day off before sunday’s season opener at arizona, they nonetheless had no issues finishing up a 20-16 exhibition season with their fifth consecutive victory.hundley hit his third spring homer off oakland starter andrew triggs in the fourth inning after conor gillaspie opened with a walk, chris marrero was hit by a pitch and aaron hill followed with a single to left. hundley clubbed a 1-0 pitch into the left field seats to erase an early 2-0 deficit.ruggiano, who lost out to marrero for the final position player roste

nfl: packers’ aaron rodgers will need surgery

green bay packers coach mike mccarthy knew that this was one injury that his two-time nfl mvp could not shake off, and monday confirmed the worst.mccarthy said rodgers will have surgery on his broken right collarbone, putting the rest of the quarterback’s season in jeopardy.“he’ll be out a minimum, a significant amount of time — potentially the season could be over,” he said.backup brett hundley is now the starting quarterback. a fifth-round draft pick in 2015, hundley went 18 of 33 for 157 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions in relief of rodgers. the packers promoted third-stringer joe callahan from the practice squad to back up hundley.mccarthy said the team is looking at some free agents to help in practice. but don’t expect them to bring in colin kaepernick.“did you just lis

packers' rodgers breaks collarbone, season in doubt

packers quarterback aaron rodgers was knocked out of sunday's game during his fourth pass, when vikings linebacker anthony barr hit him shortly after he threw.rodgers, who completed 2 of 4 passes for 18 yards before exiting, was evaluated in green bay's medical tent and carted off the field. he suffered a broken collarbone that will sideline him for weeks, if not the remainder of the season."it's devastating, no question about it," said packers receiver randall cobb. "first and foremost, that is one of my closest friends, so to see him go down, that is tough. we still have to play football. we have a long season ahead of us to figure out what we are going to do."the vikings defense rolled without rodgers. backup quarterback brett hundley threw an interception on his first pass, a tipped ba

good things for madison bumgarner and giants in spring opener

scottsdale, ariz. – the game didn’t matter. the result was inconsequential. but something important might have been won in the giants’ exhibition opener friday afternoon.madison bumgarner’s faith in a catcher other than buster posey.“that was a tough pitch to catch – a backdoor curveball, and i pulled it a little bit,” said bumgarner, of the dirt skipper he threw with a runner at third base. “i’m sure that caught him off guard. i was impressed. that was pretty good.”nick hundley blocked the ball that seemed destined for the backstop, momentarily saving a run. the cincinnati reds scored anyway, when patrick kivlehan hit a two-run single. but there was no erasing the impression that posey’s new backup catcher made on the giants’ left-handed ace.“it’s my job to get on the same page so when bu

crawford homers but giants lose to brewers

san francisco – even amid this shattered mirror of a season, there are those fleeting moments when the light falls at a flattering angle and the giants resemble their former selves.they had one of those moments in the fifth inning of their 4-3 loss tuesday night.brandon crawford launched an offspeed pitch into the deepest reaches of the arcade for a two-run home run that gave the giants the lead over the milwaukee brewers. then pablo sandoval punctuated a nine-pitch at-bat with a crisp single up the middle.but the giants did not add to their one-run advantage, and the bullpen could not safely carry it past the driveway. albert suarez gave up a pair of runs on a walk, two doubles and a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning, and the giants were a step too slow – more like five, actually – when

giants' trevor brown embraces chance to grow his catching skills

mesa, ariz. – as buster posey prepares to depart giants camp for the world baseball classic, the innings behind the plate are about to pick up for backup catchers nick hundley and trevor brown.it’s more a collaboration than a competition. hundley has a guaranteed contract and is on the team. brown’s only hope, at least to start, is that the giants decide to carry a third catcher – a luxury that manager bruce bochy covets every spring but seemingly never can afford.the giants had plans to increase brown’s versatility, but they have too many other non-roster infielders in camp. so he’s been taking ground balls at second and third on his own time, just in case.brown knows he almost certainly will begin the season at triple-a sacramento, but he sees the positives in that assignment. he’s never

the unsung hero in giants' improbable comeback win

san francisco – michael morse’s improbable pinch home run was an unforgettable moment. so was christian arroyo’s first major league homer.but they weren’t the only key contributors in one of the giants’ most memorable regular-season comeback victories in recent years wednesday night.they don’t pull out the 4-3, 10-inning victory over the dodgers without gorkys hernandez.hernandez led off the 10th inning with a single. he stole second base. he got a great jump to beat the throw when adrian gonzalez tried to cut him down at third base on nick hundley’s sacrifice bunt.and he made a sliding catch in the left field corner earlier in the game, too.it was a monumental game for a player who began the season in a 2-for-31 slump and probably would have been designated for assignment if denard span h

on the nfl mark craigthe question seemed jinx-proof on oct. 11. after all, back on oct. 11, the packers had started brett favre or aaron rodgers in 431 of their last 440 regular-season and postseason games.that means from week 4 of the 1992 season through week 5 of the 2017 season, the packers needed their backup quarterback nine times. and only seven times was the need injury-related.so, in doing a story on the vikings' case keenum, i said to packers coach mike mccarthy, "mike, i know you haven't had to use them over the years, but what's the main quality you look for in a backup quarterback?"four days later, rodgers was on the turf at u.s. bank stadium with a broken right collarbone, signifying that we had arrived at the mother of all injury-plagued seasons before halloween.a day later,

nick hundley delivered a walk off win for the giants.

san francisco — nick hundley saved a sparkling start from pitcher jeff samardzija, lifting a walk-off home run into the first row of the arcade in the 10th inning.after producing just one hit over the game’s first eight innings, the giants found a way to squeak out a pair of hits in the ninth to send the game to extra innings before hundley delivered a 2-1 win over the st. louis cardinals by blasting his second-career walk off homer off reliever ryan sherriff.in doing so, the giants snapped a four-game losing streak.hunter pence started the comeback charge in the ninth by hitting a ground ball single up the middle. after joe panik moved pence over to second with a sacrifice bunt, buster posey tied the game by reaching down to bloop cardinals pitcher tyler lyons’ low slider over second base

ty blach pitches giants past braves

san francisco — like matt cain, giants starter ty blach continues to dish out his best stuff in the pitcher-friendly confines of at&t park.the only difference is that blach actually received some run support, and plenty of it, saturday as the giants (21-30) returned to the win column with a 6-3 victory over the atlanta braves.after spoiling a seven-inning, one-run performance from cain on friday night, the giants’ offense made sure that it didn’t deal the same fate to blach as the left-hander put together one of his strongest starts of the season, tossing seven shutout innings before surrendering a pair of earned runs in the eighth. he also recorded a season-high five strikeouts.the giants, who ranked 30th in runs per game after friday’s 2-0 loss to the braves, scored five times before the

hartman: with rodgers out, vikings defense sticks to plan

the vikings have had their share of injuries, losing running back dalvin cook for the season and missing quarterback sam bradford for much of it — and that’s coming off last season, when qb teddy bridgewater missed the whole year after suffering a preseason knee injury.but the packers appear to have suffered a more serious blow when they likely lost quarterback aaron rodgers for the season when he broke his collarbone on a hit by linebacker anthony barr in the vikings’ 23-10 victory at u.s. bank stadium on sunday. rodgers was one of four packers offensive starters to get injured.add that to the fact that detroit is 3-3 following a 52-38 loss to new orleans, and the bears are 2-4 and don’t look very competitive, and the vikings might be in a good position to win the nfc north. their remaini
