giants concerned about johnny cueto's continued absence

scottsdale, ariz. – the giants know that johnny cueto can opt out of his contract after this season. but for now, the question continues to be when he’ll opt in.cueto is still in the dominican republic while tending to his 71-year-old father, whose health challenges have improved to the point where he can travel but was awaiting final documentation.giants gm bobby evans said monday he received indications that the visa and passport issues were close to being resolved, and that cueto would be in scottsdale sometime during the middle of this week. of course, evans had the same indications a few days earlier, when the club believed that cueto would arrive over the past weekend.this much is clear: the giants would not be cool with cueto going straight to miami to join the dominican republic te

cueto makes giants spring debut with ailing father in stands

scottsdale, ariz. — johnny cueto made his first spring training appearance saturday under the watchful eye of the giants’ staff and a new coach sitting in the stands at scottsdale stadium — cueto’s 71-year-old father, domingo.“last night he was giving me a pep talk — he said you need to pitch good,” cueto said through interpreter erwin higueros. “it was 11 o’clock and he was telling me you have to go sleep because you have to pitch tomorrow.”one of the reasons cueto is off to a late start was because his father has been ailing in the dominican republic and he needed to tend to him. domingo’s health has improved, but while he was ill, cueto decided he would bring his father to the united states to live with him, not just here in arizona but in san francisco during the as well.it’s a develop

johnny cueto arrives in giants camp

scottsdale, ariz. – johnny cueto could have reported on time to spring training. but he knew he wouldn’t have been fully present. his thoughts would have remained in the dominican republic.when your own father doesn’t recognize you, it’s not a simple thing to leave his side.“he was talking nonsense,” said cueto, of his 71-year-old father, domingo. “he was just not right. he was not recognizing anybody.”cueto is back in giants camp now. he took his physical, put on a uniform and played some light catch saturday. he arrived 19 days behind the other pitchers and catchers, and is grateful both for his father’s improved health and the team’s support.he’s ready to shimmy those shoulders again.“i’m happy to be here,” said cueto, through interpreter erwin higueros. “this year i know all my teammat

scottsdale, ariz. – closer mark melancon is leaving to join team usa for the final round of the world baseball classic, while another pitcher in giants camp is left to deal with disappointment and deflect the carping of critics.johnny cueto said he would have pitched tuesday’s semifinal game for the dominican republic against japan, had his country beaten team usa on saturday to advance to the final round.instead, he is hearing it from fans back home for not participating earlier in the tournament – even though it’s well documented that the right-hander reported late because of his father’s health issues.“there’s a lot of talk back home that i didn’t want to pitch for the dominican team because i’m making too much money,” cueto said. “why? there are players making more money than me, like

giants catcher buster posey's neck improves

scottsdale, ariz. – buster posey pronounced himself and his “old man neck” fit for the world baseball classic.the giants’ cleanup-hitting catcher is back in the lineup and will be behind the plate for friday’s exhibition against the a’s at mesa, after missing the previous two days with a stiff neck. he’s had just four plate appearances all spring, leading to concerns about his readiness as he prepares to leave monday to join team usa in florida.but posey said he should be ready – and his “old man neck” was feeling better.“just a bad night’s sleep,” said posey, joking that he’s still 29 years old until march 27. “i’m not 30 yet. i’ve got a few more weeks left.”as long as all goes well in friday’s exhibition, posey plans to make a rare trip to surprise on saturday – “surprise! i am,” he said

compressed schedule for johnny cueto

scottsdale, ariz. – a year ago, johnny cueto did almost no offseason throwing before he arrived for his first spring as a giant. he was coming off a world series run with the kansas city royals and wanted to rest his arm as long as possible.the pace is much different this spring. cueto must hit the ground running to be ready for the world baseball classic in mid-march. yet his arrival in giants camp might be delayed until the weekend while he remains in the dominican republic to attend to his ill father.the giants recognize that family comes first. there is no such thing as an ideal time to cope with parent’s declining health. and though the current timing would seem especially worrisome, giants manager bruce bochy insisted he wasn’t concerned.bochy said cueto has been throwing at the gian

johnny cueto, santiago casilla visa issues: age-old problem

the trump administration’s approach to immigration probably has nothing to do with visa issues involving pitchers johnny cueto and santiago casilla and other athletes trying to report to training camps.the state department hasn’t exceeded the standard wait time this year when issuing special visas for athletes, according to a source familiar with the process. that means the problem lies with the giants’ cueto and a’s casilla — or their teams. however, the spring training absences of the bay area pitchers highlight a continuing trend as american professional sports embrace globalization. the united states’ complicated immigration system has caused hundreds of foreign athletes over the years from arriving on time although there is a process designed especially for them.here is a brief explan

bruce bochy maps out giants rotation

scottsdale, ariz. – giants manager bruce bochy mapped out his rotation for the first handful of spring exhibition games, and in the process, more or less telegraphed how his starters will align to begin the season.madison bumgarner is expected to start and pitch an inning in friday’s cactus league opener against the cincinnati reds in scottsdale, with matt cain following him. left-hander ty blach will start on saturday, followed by left-hander matt moore on sunday and right-hander jeff samardzija on monday.blach is pitching on the day that would belong to no.2 starter johnny cueto, who has remained in the dominican republic to tend to his ailing father. cueto was in the process of securing a visa for his father so they could travel together to arizona over the coming weekend.the apparent r

giants' posey, crawford could face cueto in wbc

san francisco – the giants never got the chance to send johnny cueto to the mound against the cubs in what would’ve been a decisive nl division series game last october.but there will be plenty on the line when cueto finally takes the ball again in early march. the twist: giants stars like buster posey and brandon crawford could be facing cueto instead of pulling for him.cueto is among the stars who will pitch for the dominican republic in the world baseball cl ic this spring. the dominican team is tucked into a difficult bracket with team usa, colombia and canada. and although the pitching order hasn’t been announced, it’s expected that gm moises alou will use cardinals pitcher carlos martinez in the opener vs. canada and save cueto for a march 11 showdown with the stars and stripes.that’

johnny cueto's wbc participation in doubt

scottsdale, ariz. – jeff samardzija pitched to brandon belt, matt cain threw strikes to several hitters and the giants enjoyed some friendly competition on the first day of live batting practice at scottsdale stadium on monday.johnny cueto pitched to hitters as well, but the kids in the batter’s box were teenage prospects and cueto was 3,000 miles away at the giants’ camp in the dominican republic.cueto remained back home while he attends to his ailing father, who is not well enough to accompany his son on a flight to arizona. while the giants are understanding of the situation, they are beginning to acknowledge some level of concern.they know that cueto will be ready for opening day. but they’re wondering whether the world baseball classic is such a good idea.“the question is will he be r

mlb notes: a-rod returns to yankees for brief role as instructor

two years ago alex rodriguez still was very much at war with the yankees, holding his first meeting of the spring with reporters on the sidewalk in front of the club's minor league complex.two springs later a-rod is due in camp, starting on tuesday, for the start of a three-day stint as a guest instructor."he'll work with our players, to extend the knowledge that he has about how to play the game and talk to the young kids, some of the expectations," manager joe girardi said. "how to deal with it, how to deal with different positions. how to hit in the middle of the order. all the things that alex did well, those are things we want him to offer insight to our younger players. and to the older players as well."recently retired nick swisher was in camp monday as a guest instructor.cueto dela

madison bumgarner not pushing giants for lavish extension

scottsdale, ariz. – it’s become standard practice on the day giants pitchers and catchers report to spring training:madison bumgarner tows his horse trailer to town. and he insists that he is towing no bitterness over his contract.“you’re asking me the same question my grandpa asks me: `when are you going to sign a contract?’” said bumgarner, smiling as he changed into new socks.of course, bumgarner already has a contract. he likely would have broken the bank – and possibly clayton kershaw’s $215 million record deal — as a free agent this past winter. instead, he is locked into an $11.5 million salary under terms of the multiyear deal he signed in april, 2012.the giants hold absolute bargains in the form of $12 million options for the following two seasons, too. those salaries would go up

kenta maeda proved to be dodgers' marathon man last season

kenta maeda had finished his answer when he decided to offer one more thought. his interpreter listened, both men laughed, and then the last few words were translated into english.“you never know when you die too, right?” maeda said.there might have been no greater oddity on the 2016 dodgers than this: on a team that put more players on the disabled list than any in major league history, maeda was not one of them.the man with the supposedly shredded arm led the dodgers in games started and innings pitched last season. only four men in the national league west pitched more innings: madison bumgarner, johnny cueto and jeff samardzija of the san francisco giants, and chad bettis of the colorado rockies.maeda pitched 175 2/3 innings last season, his first in the major leagues. he had pitched a

giants regret lost chance to oust cubs in nlds

san francisco – the north side of chicago exploded and the baseball world gushed with emotion when the cubs finally won the world series last october. but the reaction was much different for giants players and coaches who could stomach watching to the end.the giants understood this: if not for their leaky bullpen in game 4 of their nl division series, the cubs’ world series drought probably (definitely?) would have continued.nobody understood it better than giants coach and former cubs shortstop shawon dunston.what if the giants had held onto that three-run lead in the ninth inning, and gotten to send johnny cueto plus a reliever named madison bumgarner against the cubs in a decisive game 5?“oh, we’d have won,” dunston said. “yeah. we’d have beaten the cubs in game 5. yes. we’d have won. w

madison bumgarner already looks ready for opening day after sharp six innings

scottsdale, ariz. — it’s a good thing there are still a couple of weeks left in spring training because madison bumgarner really needs the work — on his batting stroke.bumgarner struck out twice in his first pair of spring plate appearances, and on the first, he let the bat fly out of his hands into the stands, a rare occurrence for a guy who usually grips the lumber like he’s trying to squeeze sawdust out of it.as for the pitching part of his game, well, no worries whatsoever. bumgarner might already be ready for opening day. looking relaxed and super sharp for march 15, the giants’ ace hurled six shutout innings against the los angeles angels wednesday and allowed just one hit, one walk and struck out three. there was quality in those numbers, too: mike trout and albert pujols went a com

nick hundley getting quick study of giants' staff with posey at wbc

surprise, ariz. — it’s a wonderful thing for the giants that buster posey is playing in the world baseball classic. it may be even more wonderful for nick hundley that posey’s off at the wbc doing his patriotic thing.the giants’ new no. 2 catcher has been getting almost all of posey’s no. 1 duty since he departed march 6, and it’s allowed hundley to accelerate his knowledge and comfort level with the pitching staff, particularly the starting rotation.hundley has already caught madison bumgarner three times, matt cain and matt moore twice, debuted with johnny cueto on saturday and finally completed his first round with the starting staff by catching jeff samardzija monday night against the texas rangers.hundley has also re-familiarized himself with closer mark melancon, whom he hadn’t caugh

giants spring training preview: roster breakdown

giants roster breakdownrotation: lhp madison bumgarner, rhp johnny cueto, rhp jeff samardzija, lhp matt moore, rhp matt cain.the giants got what they paid for in 2016, when their $220 million investment in cueto and samardzija resulted in the kind of rotation stability that any club would envy. only the cubs received more innings from their rotation than the giants, whose 10 complete games led the major leagues. bumgarner, cueto and samardzija each topped 200 innings as the giants had three pitchers among the nl’s top five in outs recorded. bumgarner even set regular-season career bests in innings and strikeouts while leading all major leaguers in pitches thrown — and then tossed a shutout in the nl wild card game at new york’s citi field. matt moore showed his own durability down the stre

aaron hill raises his stock, johnny cueto shimmies, etc. – the mercury news

glendale, ariz. – where some novice outfielders might be terrified by all the open space, aaron hill scanned the swath of green in left field and saw only possibilities.“oh man, it’s fun, honestly,” hill said monday. “lot of diving plays meant to be made.”hill is a 12-year major league veteran infielder with no airs of entitlement. he’s a non-roster invitee trying to prove his versatility to win a bench role with the giants, and that meant standing at a foreign position under a pulsing midday sun monday afternoon.it’s the first time the longtime blue jays and diamondbacks second baseman could remember playing the outfield since his freshman year at lsu.“because mike fontenot and ryan theriot were up the middle,” hill said, laughing, “and i think you guys know them.”hill does not have theri

sunday's recap: white sox 11, angels 2

white sox top prospect yoan moncada hit his third homer of the spring to help fuel an 11-2 victory over the angels on sunday at tempe diablo stadium. moncada's two-run shot in the fifth inning off angels reliever kirby yates was the switch hitter's third batting left-handed. he also hit a two-run double.at the plate: melky cabrera had rbi singles in the third and fifth innings, and matt davidson tripled and homered.on the mound: carlos rodon's spring debut featured four scoreless innings with five strikeouts, and matt purke and zack burdi followed with a combined three scoreless innings.key number: .317 — moncada's batting average this spring after his 3-for-5 day.the quote: "the first couple of hitters i faced every inning, it seemed to be 3-1. i got to the point where i just let the defe

after adding elite closer, giants ready for another run at world series

the last thing the cubs wanted to see in the division series last october was a do-or-die game 5 against the giants at wrigley field.johnny cueto was slated to start, madison bumgarner was ready to pitch in relief, and the ghosts of the cubs' past would've been lingered in the minds of jittery fans.there was no need to worry, as it turned out. the cubs rallied from a three-run deficit in game 4, scoring four runs in the ninth inning to take the series. knocking off the giants, who had won three world series in five years, served as a launching pad that led to their long-lost championship."they're the standard-bearer for postseason toughness and resilience and everything else," cubs president theo epstein said that night. "to do what we just did in their ballpark is kind of shocking in a wa

giants prospect christian arroyo likely to start at triple-a

scottsdale, ariz. – every year at the july 31 trade deadline, when looking for hints as to what the giants might do, nothing generates more intrigue than a brian sabean spotting.it could be kauffman stadium or wrigley field or great american ball park. if the giants’ executive vice president is in the stands for a personal scouting trip, you know he’s sizing up a potential acquisition.that’s what made last summer’s deadline so unique. in the days leading up to it, sabean was nowhere near a major league ballpark. instead, he hunkered down for a week in richmond, va., watching the giants’ double-a affiliate. he paid special attention to infielder christian arroyo, the organization’s top hitting prospect, who had just begun to transition from shortstop to third base.the giants didn’t trade ar

cain, left field big questions

san francisco — giants pitchers and catchers report to scottsdale stadium on monday, accompanied by all the usual, breathy talk of hope springing eternal and abundant new beginnings.but let’s skip to the end, shall we?“sometimes i was standing up in the ninth inning,” giants manager bruce bochy said. “i’m sitting down this year.”you don’t build a roster from the back end. but after last season, there was no question the giants needed some reverse engineering.bochy’s bullpen blew a franchise-record 30 saves, including nine in september, while plummeting from baseball’s best record at the all-star break to barely sneaking into the nl wild card game. they bumgarnered their way past that obstacle in new york, and might have turned aside the chicago cubs in an nl division series — if not for th

a closer who’s open to sports science – the denver post

scottsdale, ariz. — mark melancon sprints to the mound and his heart starts racing — at precisely 183 beats per minute.it’s all by careful design for san francisco’s new closer.“i didn’t realize it was that high,” san francisco manager bruce bochy said tuesday, when his pitchers and catchers held their first spring training workout. “that shows you how ramped up these guys get with adrenalin kicking in. it’s a beautiful thing. adrenalin’s a beautiful drug as long as you can control it.”melancon sure can, and he is monitoring his every movement. the right-hander is wearing a heart rate monitor under his uniform around his rib area while he pitches.“i don’t think across the league it’s too popular,” melancon said.in fact, he asked his share of questions about sports science — his passion tha

jake arrieta pays off bet, hopes cubs still are paying him after 2017

mesa, ariz. — jake arrieta showed he was a good sport wednesday when he displayed his tattoo of the coastal carolina logo after losing a college world series bet to teammate tommy la stella.as he revealed the tattoo on an oft-covered part of his body, the cubs' workhorse pitcher was even more forthcoming regarding his desire to explore a contract extension. in doing so, arrieta wants to maintain focus on the cubs repeating as world series champions rather than becoming obsessed with an impending free agency after this season."once you get to a certain point in your career, it's a little bit easier to put that out of mind," arrieta said. "financially it's not a big worry for myself individually. the less of a distraction it can play on the team and everyone in this clubhouse, the better."i

top 20 starters for 2017 fantasy baseball

the royal we already went over all the hitters for 2017 fantasy baseball rankings.  that’s not the “royal we” as that term usually implies.  it was me writing it alone while wearing a burger king crown.  i refuse to draft a top starter where they are usually drafted.  unlike hitters, you need six starters, depending on your league depth.  simple math tells us there’s plenty of starters to go around.  simple math also says, “stop putting words in my mouth!”  in most leagues, there’s a ton of pitchers on waivers that can help you — all year.  not just in april, and then they disappear.  with the help of the stream-o-nator, you can get by with, say, three starters while streaming the rest.  there’s also the fact that three stats by starters are difficult to predict due to luck.  wins, era and

better late than never!  february in the following year is always the best time to review last year’s follies and jollies, amiright razzball nation!?after making it through the duldrums of winter (which i haven’t really had in nc, but ya know, the epa was lying about global warming), i’m finally catching up on my pitcher profile wrap-up for the 2016 season.  if anything, it turns out to be a pretty funny post!  let’s see how bad jb/grey/espn ranked the al cy young winner!  always a good time…  they say hindsight is 20/20, but seeing how bad some of these went, i’ll need my hindsight to be 420 to get through this!as i did last year and the previous seasons ere’twixt, i’m here to break down my initial 2016 starting pitcher ranks with the – hot, hot, hot!  …or cold – hits and misses.  i compa
