‘what are you puffin?’ environment minister marks world penguin day with video o

ottawa — what, some canadians are wondering, has the liberal government’s environment minister been puffin?catherine mckenna was trying to mark world penguin day with a simple tweet accompanied by a cute video of penguins frolicking in the wild.problem is, those weren’t penguins in the video, but puffins — the squat, distinctive-looking seabirds that make their homes on islands and coastlines in the north pacific and atlantic oceans.twitter, predictably, got into a flap.“you know puffins aren’t penguins, right?” came one response.“on what are you puffin?” asked another.puffins, with their red and black beaks and orange feet and legs, are found primarily in the north, notably newfoundland and labrador.penguins, on the other hand, live almost exclusively in the southern hemisphere, with the

‘gifted’ review: chris evans + child genius = one fine film

chris evans plays a man trying to raise his 7-year-old niece, a math genius (mckenna grace). rating: 3 stars out of 4.from a distance, “gifted” might not seem like much. it’s a combination of two kinds of movies — or rather two kinds of movie clichés — a custody-battle story and a tale about a math genius. in this case, the genius is a gifted natural, kind of like matt damon in “good will hunting,” only a lot younger.but in its details, in its characters and their relationships, in the unfolding of its story and even in the delicacy of its filming, “gifted” rises above cynical expectation. far from a canned piece of work, it feels sincere and inspired. it’s not going to shake up the world, but it’s a very nice and well-made movie.it also signals a moment of redemption for chris evans, who

what we still don’t know about the federal carbon-pricing plan

the federal government has unveiled its new carbon pricing plan, and while it’s almost a carbon copy of alberta’s plan, many questions remain.the federal plan, announced thursday by environment minister catherine mckenna, is a hybrid system like alberta’s, which will charge a levy on fuel and create an emissions credit trading system for large industrial polluters.the levy will start at $10 per tonne of carbon dioxide in 2018, increasing to $50 per tonne in 2022.the federal backstop system will only be imposed on jurisdictions that don’t create their own carbon tax or cap-and-trade system before the end of 2018. the government plans to table legislation in the fall, and to roll out the levy no earlier than the spring of 2018, followed by the trading system a year later.but there are still

the problem in “gifted” — not to be mistaken for the problem with “gifted” — is the question of what to do when your child is a genius.rejoicing, it seems, is not an option. do you encourage her gift to the exclusion of all other interests, setting yourself up for years of filial resentment and therapy bills? or do you try to tame and repress that natural brilliance, sacrificing the possibility of something extraordinary for the mixed blessing of normalcy?these appear to be the only options facing frank adler (chris evans), a florida bachelor who has raised his 7-year-old niece, mary (mckenna grace), since the death of her mother, diane, not long after the child was born. diane was a tortured math genius (is there any other kind in the movies?), and mary — already blessed with the kind of
