another bullpen collapse costs twins chance to sweep giants

san francisco – sunday marked one month since the twins most recently ascended to first place in the al central, a position they haven’t surrendered since. it also wrapped up yet another successful road trip, a 6-4 west coast getaway that frequently demonstrated how and why they got to such an unexpected lofty position.but ultimately, the finale also illustrated one weird idiosyncrasy of this team, one that raises doubts about their security at the top: when they lose, boy, they do it with gusto.“it’s been a very volatile year, that’s for sure,” said veteran matt belisle, whose own season mirrors his team’s bizarre tendency to crash and burn. “i’ve never had a year like this.”charged with shepherding a one-run lead in the seventh inning, belisle drove it off a cliff instead, surrendering f

hughes to 'roll with the punches' in twins bullpen for now

boston – phil hughes isn’t cured, exactly, but he’s back with the twins. his eagerness to help a surprising al central contender was stronger, the veteran righthander realized, than any lingering symptoms of circulatory problems in his pitching shoulder.“it’s something i have to manage. it’s not going to go away overnight,” hughes said after being activated wednesday, several days ahead of schedule, due to the twins’ ongoing shortage of rested pitchers. “hopefully it’s not something that hinders my ability to go out there and throw an inning or two.”it was, however, hindering his ability to throw 100 pitches at a time five weeks ago, the feeling of ennui in his arm and tingling in his fingers prompting fears that offseason surgery hadn’t completely resolved his case of thoracic outlet synd

boshers' reward for pitching well? back to the minors

buddy boshers made a big mistake sunday: he pitched.the lefthanded reliever became a casualty of the twins’ sudden shortage of bullpen arms and surplus of bullpen innings, spending roughly six hours in the big leagues before being sent back to the minors.“it’s not an easy conversation,” manager paul molitor said of his hello-goodbye with boshers, “when a guy comes up and does his job.” boshers did his, bailing out the twins, after kyle gibson recorded only eight outs, by retiring seven of the eight tigers hitters he faced in a 13-4 loss. but by pitching those 2⅓ innings, boshers sealed his fate, because the twins bullpen is still overworked, and he couldn’t pitch for another few days.the solution? return boshers to class aaa rochester, and summon nick tepesch, whose arm is fresh. tepesch,

joe blanton, boone logan are pitchers on twins radar

the twins search for pitching help has them looking a couple veteran relievers.righthander joe blanton and lefthander boone logan both are on the twins radar, according to sources with knowledge of the twins search.blanton, 36, was 7-2 with a 2,48 era in 75 games with the dodgers last season. he has appeared in 376 games in his career - most as a reliever in recent years.logan, 32, was 2-5, 3.69 with colorado last season. all of his 581 appearances have been as a reliever.the twins also would like to add a veteran position player to help with clubhouse leadership - there has been some interest in mike napoli - but the indications i received was that they really want to find help for the bullpen. the twins have several relief prospects on the verge of getting a s in the majors, but the club

randball: twins bullpen finally will get needed rest

if you are a baseball fan in general and/or a twins fan specifically, these four days with nothing but all-star festivities might leave you a little bored (even if the local team is amply represented in miami this year).but if you think you don't have anything to do, imagine being a twins relief pitcher these next four days.aside from brandon kintzler, who has a good excuse for not getting much time off since he was a late all-star addition, the rest of the oft-used twins bullpen members will have four amazing days in which they are guaranteed not to have to pitch.they might not know what to do with themselves and may instinctively wait by their phones anytime between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. on weeknights just in case they are needed.and when the twins' next series starts friday in houston, dar

former twins coach stelmaszek dies at 69

the twins bullpen was rick stelmaszek’s dominion for 32 years, and a legacy that indelible doesn’t easily fade. to this day, when paul molitor wants a reliever to loosen up, bullpen catcher nate dammann lets stelmaszek’s successor, eddie guardado, know with a wry shout: “hey, stelly, get the phone!”“it’s always been our little tribute to a great man,” guardado said monday. “i’m just proud i had a chance to know stelly and be his friend. but he was everybody’s friend.”stelmaszek, who oversaw the bullpen, organized spring training, tutored the catchers and kept generations of twins players entertained with his droll and biting sense of humor, died monday of pancreatic cancer in chicago. stelmaszek, the longest-serving uniformed employee in twins history, was 69.“he was an absolute character,

twins top angels 3-2 behind miguel sano, jose berrios and stout bullpen

anaheim, calif. – the twins left target field on wednesday saddled with a four-game losing streak and a scarred bullpen. they had no idea how long it would take for them to recover.it ended up not being long at all.the twins defeated the angels 3-2 on sunday, giving them three victories in the four-game series. miguel sano put the twins over the top with a two-run homer in the sixth. jose berrios twice pitched his way out of trouble in six solid innings. and the bullpen, which looked like a playpen a few days ago, provided three scoreless innings.it enabled manager paul molitor to say three words that were unspeakable just a few days ago.“we have stabilized,” he said.while the twins are 12-18 at home, they are 17-6 on the road. and they used the road to sort out their problems. tom wallace

gee earns second start for twins; melville dfa'd

chicago – after following two games monday with a day’s worth of discussion, the twins will give dillon gee another start, pitching the veteran righthander saturday at toronto, manager paul molitor said tuesday night.gee had been pitching well out of the twins bullpen, and molitor has made it clear he values having an experienced long reliever. but gee retired 18 of 20 hitters he faced in a victorious start over the white sox on monday night.earlier tuesday, the twins mulled whether to start gee, tim melville or aaron slegers vs. the blue jays. but melville, who gave up five runs in 3⅓ innings in losing the first game of monday’s doubleheader, was designated for assignment after tuesday’s game, and the twins will call up righthanded reliever john curtiss, a source with knowledge of the mov

pressly close to taking 'next step' as a veteran standout in twins bullpen

fort myers, fla. – it had already begun to dawn on ryan pressly that things have changed for him with the twins this spring. there were hints in his conversations with teammates, occasional deference from his coaches. but even so, he wasn’t sure how far he could push things.so when he stopped by paul molitor’s office with a request on tuesday, he still found himself mildly shocked by the answer.“i was pitching [on the road] wednesday, so i asked mollie, ‘can i drive myself to port charlotte?’ ” pressly said. driving is considered a perk, because it allows players to leave once they’ve been removed, rather than waiting for the team bus after the game. “he said, ‘yeah.’ i was like, ‘i can? you said yes?’ and he said, ‘you’ve accumulated enough time around here to do that.’ ”wow, time flies,

twins' bullpen crumbles yet again, astros tee off for six home runs

the daily bonfires lit by the twins’ bullpen wound up consuming their entire homestand. now it threatens the whole season, and it’s not clear who’s going to put out this inferno.an overstressed unit that coughed up the tying runs in the ninth on sunday, surrendered 14 runs in two innings monday, and turned a winnable game into a rout tuesday, finally bottomed out in the wednesday sunshine. trailing by only one run after six innings, the twins turned to their bullpen and received nothing but misery: a six-run seventh decided the outcome, a three-run eighth added an extra poke in the eye, and human white flag chris gimenez surrendered two more runs in the ninth. houston smashed six home runs and completed its more-than-convincing three-game sweep with a 17-6 dismantling at target field.“we’r

reusse: bad in 2016, twins bullpen remains a source of concern

fort myers, fla. – the twins opened the 2016 season with lefthanders glen perkins and fernando abad, and righthanders kevin jepsen, trevor may, ryan pressly, casey fien and michael tonkin in a seven-pitcher bullpen.manager paul molitor expressed the same hope as had his predecessor, ron gardenhire, for lo those many years, hoping to limit the bullpen to seven pitchers and thus maintain a four-player bench for the next five months.molitor made it three weeks into the season before adding a reliever, which was better than gardenhire’s average, what with his legendary paranoia about overworking a bullpen.“gardy sent me to [class aaa] rochester to start the 2007 season, because he wanted three catchers,’’ glen perkins said. “i made one start there and gardy decided he wanted another reliever.’

duffey grasps new 'asset' role for twins' bullpen

tyler duffey was a closer at rice university before the twins drafted him, splitting the job with another twins draftee, j.t. chargois. he saved seven games in 2012, four others in 2010.so is he a future twins closer, too?“let’s not get ahead of ourselves here,” duffey said. “i’ve been a reliever for six weeks.”good point. but at least the 26-year-old texan identifies himself as a bullpen dweller again, an admission that gave him pause at first. it wasn’t the role he wanted, and probably still isn’t. he’s embraced the job, though, and with more sincerity than “better to be a reliever in the majors than a starter at triple-a.”“i think he actually likes it now,” bullpen coach eddie guardado said. “and i think he can be really successful at it, too.”it’s starting to look that way. duffey has

hartman: twins owner pohlad rolls with ebb, flow of season

it’s amazing how things can change overnight in major league baseball. last friday, the twins returned from baltimore after sweeping an orioles team that had been playing exceptionally well at camden yards.so the twins were in first place by two games in the american league central and seven games above .500, with tampa bay and houston coming to target field for two three-game series.and with starters ervin santana and jose berrios pitching well and the bullpen supplying steady support, there were high hopes the team would continue winning.but the game can turn just like that. the twins lost five of six and were dominated in a sweep by the astros.the bullpen collapsed, allowing 28 runs in three games to houston (another 12 runs were given up by starters). closer brandon kintzler, who had b

breslow 2.0 throws in bullpen during second day of twins spring training

greetings from fort myers, where the twins have begun their second day of camp.craig breslow is one of the pitchers scheduled to throw in the bullpen today, so the twins will get their first look at his new arm angle that has helped increase the, "spin rate," on his breaking ball. breslow, signed as a non-roster invite just over a week ago, is battling taylor rogers, buddy boshers and ryan o'rourke to be a lefty out of the bullpen. i've got to believe that the twins would prefer at least two left-handed relievers in the bullpen (not counting glen perkins until he can pitch in games). the sleeper of this group, to me, is o'rourke. if the twins can afford to keep a left-handed one out guy (loogy), o'rourke held lefty hitters to an .077 batting average last season. but if the twins have anoth

twins are worth watching, analyzing

given the choice between watching three hours of early sunday coverage of the masters or three hours of twins baseball from the first week of the mlb season, i mostly chose the latter.call me a sucker for baseball, or maybe more so a local team, or probably even more so for the suddenly compelling twins. i know there are 162 twins games a year and only one final round of the masters every year. a choice is a choice.at the very least, those three hours allowed for the solidification of a few notions about these suddenly fundamentally sound, 5-1 twins. let’s take a spin through five of them:• ervin santana is not an ace, per se, but he inspires roughly the same feeling that carl pavano did when he was at his best for the twins in 2010: that every time he pitches, the twins have a reasonable

rick stelmaszek, a twins bullpen coach for 32 years, died monday from pancreatic cancer in chicago.stelmaszek was a twins coach from 1981 to 2012, a tenure that is the third-longest in major league history. he threw out the first pitch on opening day at target field in 2017.he played in 60 major league games, with the rangers and angels, and seven seasons in class aaa during an 11-year professional career.stelmaszek, 69, was diagnosed with cancer late in 2016.he won the herb carneal lifetime achievement award for this season from the twin cities chapter of the baseball writers association of america.

twins agree to terms with veteran lefthander zach duke

the twins have agreed to terms on a contract with veteran lefthander zach duke, a major league source said monday.the deal is pending a physical. duke, who will be 35 on april 19, pitched last season for the st. louis cardinals, going 1-1 with a 3.93 era in 27 relief outings. he did not make his season debut until july 21, but the fact he was able to pitch at all last season was surprising, given that he had tommy john elbow ligament replacement surgery in october 2016.recovery from the process typically takes at least one year. according to fangraphs, duke’s return, 287 days after his surgery, was the fastest of any major league pitcher in the previous decade.that surgery came after an effective 2016 season with the white sox and cardinals, when he went 2-1 with a 2.36 era in 81 games, pi

twins' day at camp: it will be tricky for vargas to land roster spot

fort myers, fla. – on saturday, kennys vargas was 2-for-5 with a home run for puerto rico in a victory over venezuela in the world baseball classic. he has played in only two of a possible six games in the wbc, and the time away from the twins might cost him a chance to make the opening day roster.vargas was supposed to see action against lefthanded pitching, but puerto rico hasn’t faced much of that.“i’m sure it has been tricky to get him at-bats,” twins manager paul molitor said. “they are trying to win.”now it’s going to be tricky for vargas to win a job with the twins. puerto rico plays the netherlands on monday night in los angeles with a chance to reach the championship wednesday. molitor said there is still time for vargas to win a spot on the roster if he can be available the fina
