bulls face suns in battle of rebuilding teams

bulls' lauri markkanen hears dirk nowitzki comparisons 'a lot'

he’s 7-feet tall, blond and european, he’s an adept shooter and can take the ball to the basket. so it’s natural to want to compare chicago bulls rookie lauri markkanen to nba great dirk nowitzki.“i’ve been hearing that a lot,” markkanen said tuesday at the advocate center in chicago.“it’s a huge honor to be compared to him, a hall of famer. of course we have similarities being tall guys, being able to shoot the ball and put the ball on the floor.”markkanen said he didn’t mold his game after the mavericks’ nowitzki — or anyone else — while growing up simply because he didn’t watch much basketball while a youngster in finland. when he did catch rare glimpses, he first studied how guards played before a growth spurt turned his attention to the big men.“i hear a lot of comparisons to dirk so

bulls rookie lauri markkanen focused on basics, not jimmy butler trade

lauri markkanen said he feels no additional pressure from forever being included in one of the most polarizing transactions in franchise history, the bulls' decision to trade jimmy butler.there's enough pressure anyway in being an nba rookie, particularly one entering a rebuilding situation. markkanen has to learn the league, master living in a new city, study a new system, figure how to play multiple positions.nevertheless, given that butler is a proven all-star who, barring injury, will remain among the game's elite two-way players for the timberwolves, how markkanen plays as the bulls embark upon a full rebuild will determine a lot.perhaps it's best then for the soft-spoken 20-year-old to focus on the simple stuff first."i know how to get (to the advocate center) and the united center a

"of course there’s something small [i’ve seen], but i mean it’s just competing. of course it got a little bit out of hand."but i’m just excited. not too anxious, but it’s definitely a dream come true. i’m ready to play."markkanen displayed some chops in the final two exhibitions, rebounding from a poor debut aft

"at the same time, i can't be satisfied. we haven't won a game yet."coach fred hoiberg can relate to markkanen's admission that guarding james was a thrill because james was his favorite player growing up in finland, even down to the retro james' shoe model that markkanen wore at arizona."(michael) jordan, we're playing him in a preseason game. and just to look down at the other end and see the greatest player on the planet warming up and have a chance to match up a little bit, it is surreal," hoiberg said. lauri markkanen seizes early opportunity to impress, even in losing effort

bobby portis' eight-game suspension for punching nikola mirotic in the face and sidelining mirotic for four to six weeks with a concussion and facial fractures no longer merely raises the question of whether the power forwards can co-exist moving forward.their absences have created an opening for lauri markkanen and he continues to seize his opportunity as he did tuesday night despite the bulls' 119-112 loss to the cavaliers.which begs the question: should markkanen start if and when portis and mirotic return?"he has been really good," hoiberg said.
