morgantown, w.va. — west virginia health officials are responding to opioid overdoses by distributing more than 8,000 kits with an antidote.money for the kits comes from a $1 million federal grant. west virginia has had the nation's highest rate of overdose deaths, and naloxone can get people breathing again if administered in time.the state health department is managing the grant, and west virginia university's injury control research center will implement and evaluate the project.thousands of the two-dose kits will go out in the next few weeks to high priority areas, including needle-exchange programs and police and fire departments in the cities of huntington, charleston, wheeling and morgantown.

elizabethtown, ky. — a kentucky jailer says six inmates have been treated at a hospital after apparently taking some kind of contraband.hardin county jailer danny allen told news outlets that some of the inmates were initially found unresponsive on sunday night, but he said all were responsive and combative by the time they were taken to a hospital.he said officials are awaiting test results from the hospital to see what the inmates ingested.allen said all of the inmates had been returned to the jail by 1 a.m. monday, and they could face additional charges.

houston — inmates serving time in texas prisons have also found a way to help those impacted by hurricane harvey.officials say texas prison inmates donated more than $53,000 from their commissary funds to the american red cross to be used for hurricane relief.texas department of criminal justice spokesman jason clark says more than 6,600 inmates donated money between aug. 31 and sept. 30. harvey made landfall in texas as a category 4 hurricane on aug. 25.the commissary funds are usually used by inmates to buy food and supplies while they're incarcerated.this wasn't the first time texas prison inmates have donated money to help after a natural disaster.after hurricane katrina in 2005, inmates donated more than $40,000 to the american red cross.

charleston, w.va. — authorities say a worker took a fatal fall at a west virginia mine owned by gov. jim justice.patrick graham is vice president for southern coal corp. he says a worker at the company's bishop preparation plant in mcdowell county died about 10:30 p.m. monday.graham says both the company and mine safety agencies are investigating to determine exactly what happened.the west virginia office of miners' health, safety and training says 43-year-old jason kenneth matthews of bluefield, virginia, was killed in the incident.justice issued a statement tuesday asking west virginians to pray for the lost miner and his family.the justice administration has said that the new governor established a trust to run his businesses while he's in office.

caracas, venezuela — a top prison official says six inmates died and another 11 have been wounded in a brawl among prisoners at a penitentiary in eastern venezuela.prison affairs minister iris varela said tuesday that the violence erupted at puente ayala penitentiary in anzoategui state. her comments were published in the regional newspaper el tiempo.venezuela has some 30 lockups with close to 50,000 inmates that suffer overcrowding and violence generated by gangs that control life inside and traffic in drugs and weapons.some opposition members said they believed the death toll was much higher but it was impossible to immediately confirm that.
