former shakopee schools superintendent rod thompson was booked tuesday into the scott county jail, where he is awaiting felony theft and embezzlement charges.thompson, 52, turned himself in to authorities following a six-month investigation into his alleged misuse of district credit cards. he resigned amid pressure in june after police began investigating personal purchases made on the district’s dime.since his 2011 hiring, the embattled schools chief has reimbursed the district $3,450, including more than $2,100 in personal amazon purchases and hundreds in travel and food charges, according to school financial records. those charges went toward a 42” flat-screen tv, a trip to nashville and meals at nice restaurants.investigators also allege that thompson got kickbacks, including vacations and loans, from companies won contracts with the district.concerned parents and community members began their own inquiry into thompson in march, shortly after he notified staff of a $4.5 million budget shortfall, which he blamed on “human error.”an fbi investigation into thompson’s alleged kickbacks with construction firms remains open.this is a developing story. check back at startribune.com for updates.
