a 27-year-old man was hit by a car and killed early tuesday near del mar when he apparently tried to run back to his disabled car to retrieve a cell phone after crashing into the center divide of interstate 5.the man was driving a 2000 toyota north on i-5 near via de la valle around 2:30 a.m. when he veered left for an unknown reason and struck the divide, said california highway patrol acting sgt. s. robinson.the motorist got out of his car and walked to the shoulder, leaving his car, which was turned sideways across the two inside lanes. a 2018 mercedes suv driving in the fast lane slammed into the toyota, pushing the wreckage into the no. 2 and no. 3 lanes.it was at that point, robinson said, that the man walked into traffic lanes toward his car and was hit by a 2016 jeep.a witness told 10news that the driver said he was late for work and needed to retrieve his cell phone. despite protests, he went to dash across the freeway lanes to get it and was struck.the man, who was a la mesa resident, died before he could be taken to the hospital. his name has not yet been released.the chp issued a traffic alert and closed all the lanes of the freeway around 3:15 a.m. except for the hov lanes.around 5:30 a.m., three of the four lanes were reopened and an hour later, the final lane was cleared. the eastbound via de la valle on-ramp to northbound i-5 was closed for about three hours.robinson said the driver of the mercedes and the jeep stopped after the collision. neither drugs nor al...
