antioch — crews have completed the cleanup of mercury found on manzanita way this week and are now working to help residents recognize the toxic metal and prevent future exposure in the community, according to contra costa county officials.the 2200 block of manzanita way was closed since 11 a.m. monday after officials found liquid mercury in seven areas of the block. health officials suspect the substance may have spilled during the collection of a garbage can that was left out in the street.mercury in higher-than-normal levels is most dangerous to babies and the elderly, and its effects can be especially dangerous over long-term exposure, according to contra costa county hazardous materials specialist seth heller.investigators do not believe there was long-term exposure in this case, heller said.officials did not order a shelter-in-place during the clean-up. investigators examined the garbage truck that went through the area and deemed it safe, heller said.crews were also called to the 2200 block of mandarin way on jan. 22 and to the 2300 block of mandarin way on dec. 22.specialized equipment, including instruments that measure mercury vapor in the air, helped investigators identify the spots impacted by the mercury and reduce the spread of contamination. it was confined to the street and was not present on the sidewalk and private driveways, according to county officials.short-term exposure to high levels of mercury can cause nausea and vomiting, skin rashes, eye irritati...
