orinda — after weeks of legal wrangling, a couple has given the city the green light to fix a gaping sinkhole near their home.homeowners darryl and jana rains agreed march 13 to allow the city “right of entry” to their camino lenada property in order to repair the crater that formed in january on nearby miner road following an intense winter storm.the permission lets the city of orinda begin work on a 16-feet wide by 7-feet high box culvert that will replace the failed storm drain that led to the road’s collapse.the city needed the couple’s consent in order to get state and federal reimbursement for the repair job. the rains’ property includes a portion of lauterwasser creek on both sides of miner road, which the city needs to access for the repair.according to a city timeline, staffers will need to obtain new environmental permitting for the project, and finalize a plan for temporary dam and creek diversion.after the sinkhole site dries out, the area will be graded and prepped, and concrete poured. the project includes new asphalt, creek bank re-planting and decorative wall treatment. the city hopes to finish the work between june 1 to july 1.the agreement cut short a potential two-year wait period, and a temporary fix that included a $200,000 rental bridge.the city initially estimated the cost to repair the sinkhole at around $2.5 million, but the final amount will likely increase, according to city staff.orinda will be reimbursed for about 88....
