energizer phone with mammoth 16,000mah battery powers up in a teaser video

it takes a while to lift the veil off a 16,000mah battery – but it will be worth the wait. yesterday, we saw the bottom bezel of the energizer power max p16k pro, now we get a peek at the top.you can see the 5.99” 1080p+ screen has rounded corners to match the rounded corners of the chassis. also check out the 8mp selfie camera – it seems like it has its own flash.the design seems to be based on the power max p600s, most of the specs line up too (screen, chipset, dual rear camera). well, everything aside from the battery, of course, the p600s has a 4,500mah battery while the p16k earns its name with a whopping 16,000mah capacity. still, the powermax p16k pro should look roughly the same, here's an image of the p600s:energizer power max p600senergizer will have a booth at the mwc where the p16k should be shown to the world in full.

sony may launch three new devices at the mwc - two xz2 phones and a surprise

the rumor mill has been pretty clear that we’ll see the sony xperia xz2 and xperia xz2 compact at the mwc stage. but it seems that there will be a surprise third entry.sony mobile’s facebook account for south africa invites people to watch the unveiling of “three amazing new xperia models”.the image attached to this post features the current xperia xa2 ultra, though we’ll try not to read too much into that. the new xa2 duo is not yet available in the country, although the post talks about the livestream from barcelona so presumably it references a global launch.so, which phone could accompany the xz2 flagship duo? an xperia xz2 premium or an “s” version of a current model? or something more towards the mid-range? well, tune in on monday to find out.thanks for sending this in, hardussource

google assistant goes global this year, becomes multilingual, integrates deeper with your phone and carrier

the fact that google has planned a big expansion for its assistant in 2018 was first revealed last week. back then the number of supported languages was said to be 25 by the end of the year, but today the company has officially announced that assistant will speak more than 30 languages before we say hello to 2019. that will make it reach 95% of all eligible android phones worldwide.the first new languages will be danish, dutch, hindi, indonesian, norwegian, swedish, and thai, with more coming at some point after that first wave. these will be available both on android and ios, by the way.what's more, google assistant will become multilingual later this year, which means you'll be able to speak to it in multiple languages without altering a setting every time you want to switch. it will understand what you say in multiple languages fluently. this feature will first be available for english, french, and german, with support for more arriving "over time".perhaps responding to the threat posed to the assistant's existence by samsung's bixby, google says it's working with phone makers so they can build deeper integrations between the assistant and device features and develop integration with hardware ai chips. this assistant mobile oem program has been in the works since mwc last year, apparently. expect to see such integrations from lg, sony, and xiaomi soon.interestingly, google has a similar program for carriers, so in the future you'll just ask the assistant about your...

samsung galaxy note8 long-term review

introductionwhile some phones are inspired by the 'less is more' mantra, samsung's galaxy note family has always proudly claimed that 'more is more'. more features, more options, more settings, more ways to interact with your handset, more choice made possible by the use of the best components adding up to the biggest and baddest spec list. to paraphrase a well known cliche, a note comes with everything and the kitchen sink.the galaxy note8 made a splash last fall, being the first model in the line with a screen curved on both sides that didn't get recalled shortly after launch. samsung carried over the iconic infinity display from its s8 duo released earlier in 2017. the note8 augments its distinctive design with the s pen stylus and the korean company's first dual rear camera setup.given how note-starved certain parts of the world have been in the past couple of years, this smartphone has a lot of hype to live up to. on paper it is definitely the best and most feature-packed handset samsung has ever produced, and yet you may be wondering how that translates into real life, day to day use.you've seen all the usual tests in our normal review, but now it's time to take a deeper and more subjective dive into what makes the note8 tick.let's find out if the phone is as nice to handle as it is easy on the eyes, how disturbing those display curves really turn out to be, whether performance is all lag-free, and how the note8's battery handles a power user's average day. ...

huawei p20 appears in tenaa photos with dual cameras

huawei p20 is arriving on march 27 when an event is scheduled in paris, but thanks to tenaa we got to see first images of the phone a month early. codenamed eml-tl00, the phone appeared from all four sides on the chinese website, revealing a vertical dual camera setup on the back and another dual setup on the front for selfies.huawei p20 on tenaaalthough we’ve heard rumors about a tri-lens camera, the vertical setup is actually for the laser autofocus and the dual-led flash, all lined one above the other. the huawei logo follows the same design line, suggesting the phone will be used for taking pictures in landscape mode (or as some might call it, the proper mode to take smartphone pictures).the front reveals two camera lenses, sitting close to each other in the center, so a notch is still pretty much relevant discussion point. the fingerprint scanner will stay below the screen like in the predecessor huawei p10. the volume rocker and the power button are also keeping their place, along with the specific texture of the keys.source(in chinese) | via

sony patches up xperia xz, xperia xzs and x performance for “spectre” and “meltdown”

sony mobile keeps going with pushing firmware updates to its devices. after the xperia xz premiumgot patched for “spectre” and “meltdown”, next in line are the xperia xz, xperia xzs and xperia x performance that are over two years old. owners of these three devices should already be receiving the new 47.1.a.12.75 build over the air.the security update has a february 1, 2018, date and is mostly patching up the software for the cpu vulnerabilities. the firmware does not mention any other changes and is just 120 mb in size. the upgrade should be hitting both dual-sim and single-sim versions of the three phones.via

mediatek p60 chipset headed to mwc, geekbench reveals

mediatek is working on new chips and occasionally it lets them run a benchmark. a new model, helio p60, was caught running geekbench on a device with a tantalizing name – mtk p60 mwc demo.it sounds like this will be a reference design rather than a phone meant for retail. it did have 4gb of ram and ran android 8.1, but the cpu cores used are unknown.looking at the single-core score, it’s too high for cortex-a53 – it’s closer to (though lower than) the scores we get from cortex-a73. this is an octa-core processor so we’re likely looking at a big.little design. both scores are competitive with qualcomm’s snapdragon 660 (which uses kryo cores).note: it seems that the score has been taken from geekbench’s database. the helio p70 hasn’t been through geekbench yet.source (in chinese)

gartner: smartphone sales declined for first time ever in q4 2017

global smartphone sales reached 408 million units during the 2017 holiday season, gartner reported. this is a 5.6% decline, compared with q4 2016, when over 432 million phones found a new owner, marking the first time sales go down since gartner started tracking in 2004.according to anshul gupta, research director at gartner, two factors led to the fall: the upgrade from feature phones to smartphones slowed down due to lack of ultra-low-cost devices and users deciding to choose a quality model and stick with it for a longer time before switching. “moreover, while demand for high quality, 4g connectivity, and better camera features remained strong, high expectations weakened smartphone sales”, added gupta.due to the massive success of the galaxy s8 duo and the disappointment with the pricing and launch strategy of the iphone x, samsung was back in the lead both in volume and market share ahead of apple for q4. both companies, though, posted declines, where the actual winners are huawei and xiaomi that increased their sales with 3 million and 13 million, respectively.while there were some tectonic shifts in the quarterly results, overall 2017 results were more mellow, with an increase of 2.7% global smartphone sales - from 1,495 billion to 1,536 billion. top 5 companies held their positions - samsung was in the lead, ahead of apple, huawei, oppo, and vivo. during the past year, android users jumped from 84.8% to 85.9%, while its owners were in the vicinity of 14%. under 0.1% ...

moto g6 pops up on geekbench

rumors have been suggesting a moto g6 is on its way - first we saw some specs, then we saw some images. now the phone allegedly popped up on geekbench, revealing some of the specs. apparently, the phone, most likely to be called officially moto g 6th gen, will have snapdragon 625 chipset and 3 gb ram.the results of the moto g6 with the year-old chipset are 709 for a single-core score and 3582 for the multi-core score. although they look a bit off from the numbers that moto g5 plus reached last year with the snapdragon 625, numbers are not comparable due to the different versions of geekbench.the listing reveals that the new midranger will come with android oreo. other specs are rumored to include 12 mp + 5 mp dual camera, 16 mp selfie snapper, and around 3,000 mah battery cell. the moto g6 will most likely arrive with a tall 5.7” screen which will hopefully have a full hd+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels.source | via(in dutch)

first cheap android oreo (go edition) phones will be unveiled at mwc alongside more android one handsets

google has revealed that the first smartphones running android oreo (go edition) will become official at mwc next week. the company hasn't named any of the upcoming products, but mentions that some of them will sell for less than $50, which is rather amazing if it pans out (and there are no caveats).android oreo (go edition) is the version of the os that's specially optimized for low-end hardware. it's a streamlined iteration of android, which ships with optimized default apps and an optimized variant of the play store that highlights lightweight apps. google tells us to expect 15% faster app performance on handsets with entry-level specs, and twice the free storage as the os and built-in apps take 50% less space.phones with this os will have 1gb of ram or less, and probably 8gb of storage. google still promises "a high-quality experience".on the other hand, the android one program (focused on the mid-range segment) has been running for a while now, with xiaomi's mi a1 (pictured above) being perhaps its most popular representative. at mwc some of google's partners will introduce new android one devices, so it looks like next week will be filled with announcements of phones running stock android.android one handsets get "faster" access to os updates for two years, "including the latest ai innovations from google", and "regular" security updates for three years.source

energizer power max p16k pro smartphone arrives at mwc with 16,000 mah battery

energizer wants to make a big splash at mwc this year, and it's definitely going to achieve just that with the power max p16k pro smartphone that it will unveil on that occasion.the company is best known for its batteries, so it makes perfect sense that its next handset will have battery life as a huge focus. keyword: huge. the power max p16k pro sports a gargantuan 16,000 mah battery.that's four times bigger than what you would expect in this day and age in order to call a device one that comes with a big battery. the new energizer will obliterate its competition in this area. and while it isn't powered by the snapdragon 845 like some other products expected to become official at mwc, the power max p16k pro is no slouch in other regards either.it will have a 5.99" 2,160x1,080 touchscreen, and the mediatek helio p25 chipset paired with 6gb of ram and 128gb of storage. on the back a dual camera system features 13 mp + 5 mp sensors, while for selfies you get an 8 mp snapper. energizer promises "an ultra slim design" but with that battery capacity we doubt it can go under 10mm. the power max p16k pro becomes fully official on sunday, february 25.

new leak prices the galaxy s9 at €841, galaxy s9+ at €997

at the beginning of this week some contradictory pricing information for samsung's upcoming galaxy s9 and s9+ got leaked. today evan blass, a.k.a. @evleaks, only adds to the confusion with the newly outed images you can see below.so according to this usually reliable source, the s9 will set you back €841, while the s9+ will be priced at €997. the big question here is where these prices are supposedly from - what country or market, specifically.since they're in euros you'd expect them to be valid across the eurozone (or at least in one of the countries in it), but very rarely have we seen official recommended retail prices that don't end in 9. in this case, €849 and €999, respectively, would be much more believable for that part of the world.if these aren't purported eurozone prices, then their usefulness is hampered almost completely, because straight-up currency conversions don't work in the mobile world. let's take the galaxy note8 as an example, as it's still samsung's top of the line offering right now. its initial official price was $930 in the us and €999 in the eurozone, but if you convert those values into the other currency you'll get €754 and $1,231, respectively.this week's previous pricing leak said the s9 would cost either £740 (€837) or £800 (€905) in the uk. the first option is close enough to today's intel, but the point is that we still can't be sure what the exact pricing situation will be. that's hopefully going to stop being a myste...
