he could well be dubbed as the man women ‘love to hate’. credit that to angad bedi’s menacing portrayal of the pumped-on-power misogynist rajveer singh in shoojit sircar’s pink. restrained yet ruthless, his was a performance that simmered with disdain and disrespect to both – authority and women. then more recently, he did a complete volte face when he played the ‘ideal’ suitor sid to alia bhatt’s kaira in gauri shinde’s dear zindagi. the two diverse but defining roles have brought angad back on the pitch.

as we sit in his creatively done up sea-facing home, there’s a sense of relief on his face. a quite glow of achievement that one enjoys after being vindicated. after all he ducked a promising career in cricket for cinema. angad, as is known, was a left-arm spinner —much like his father, cricketing great bishen singh bedi. and pink did reiterate his belief in his p ion for the limelight. matching histrionics with the legendary amitabh bachchan in the courtroom face-off will long be remembered as a high point in the young actor’s career. “it’s a great feeling to be a part of a cult film like pink. when we were shooting the courtroom scenes, we sensed we were part of an important film. the involvement was so intense. with amitabh sir giving such a powerful performance, we were motivated to give our 200 per cent,” he shares. “the most beautiful feeling was when the entire team of the film, including amitji, e to delhi and watched the film at a special screening. amitji next to my father.

i was happy seeing my two idols together. my father praised my work and it was the biggest medal for me,” he says the pride evident in his voice. “it was delightful for my friends, yuvraj singh, zaheer khan, ajit agarkar and murali karthik, to see me act with amitabh bachchan. also, legends like kapil dev and sachin tendulkar, who have seen me as a kid, were now watching me on screen with amitji,” he says.

a dark character, generally, wouldn’t be a preferred choice for an actor who’s striving to make it. “it was a challenging role. and who wouldn’t want to work with shoojit sircar and amitabh bachchan?” retorts angad. surprisingly, his female fan following has increased after playing such a reviled character. “suddenly i’ve many more female fans. i get messages like ‘i hate you but i love you’. i guess s get attracted to bad boys,” he laughs.  the euphoria of having worked with the big b hasn’t yet dimmed. “we initially met at a screening of neerja when amitji told me, ‘angad, welcome aboard.’ i was dumbfounded. later, i went to his house for a reading. i was so nervous that i couldn’t speak. for the first 20 minutes, i kept staring at him… how he was sitting, what he was saying, what he was wearing, how he was turning the page. he caught me looking at him and asked what i was thinking. i muttered, ‘your shoes look expensive’. he just laughed.” he goes on to share how the legend helped him thaw on the set. “you can’t forget he’s amitabh bachchan. he noticed that i was nervous during the climax scenes. he said, ‘you’re playing a character who can buy 10 lawyers like me’. he created that inner environment for me. later, he hugged me and said ‘well done’,” he recollects.

angad insists his relationship with bachchan has friendly overtones as well. “after we finished shooting for pink, he called the team over for dinner because he was missing us. then he called me to his room and said ‘let’s watch ipl together’. i happened to say something about mumbai indians not having a winning chance, to which he retorted, ‘what are you talking… it’s my favourite team’. he appreciates that kind of interaction. he doesn’t like people getting overwhelmed.”
after the heavy duty pink, e the light and breezy dear zindagi. “with dear zindagi, i was getting to work with alia bhatt and be a part of red chilies, dharma productions and hope films. i love gauri shinde’s work. and i wanted to be in a position where shah rukh khan sees my work and the world gets to see a new side of me,” he explains his eagerness to play the small role. “alia is one of the best actors we have. she stuns you with her talent in dear zindagi. she’s a lot of fun too. and you just can’t take your eyes off her,” he smiles.

angad, who was seen on tv in shows like kaya taran, cook na kaho and khatron ke khiladi, debuted on the big screen with f.a.l.t.u. in 2011.  he was ecstatic when he signed rensil d’ silva’s ungli because he was paired with his other favourite actor sanjay dutt. “i was disappointed that it didn’t ring the box-office register. it had fine artistes, kangana ranaut, emraan hashmi, it had a hit number dance basanti, the theme was good… i don’t know what went wrong,” he says. “the frustration after ungli was not about not getting work. it was about not getting the work i wanted to do,” he laments. it was his patience that helped him bide time.  “i’m not an industry kid. i know that it will take me more time. our industry is a ‘mom and pop store’ and i have no problem with that. i’m not in the a-list of actors right now. but i’m confident i’ll reach there soon,” he says. he lists the people he wants to work with saying, “i want to work with juhi chaturvedi. she’s a fantastic writer. and of course directors like imtiaz ali, vishal bhardwaj. abhishek kapoor, ali abbas zafar and kabir khan. i’d love to team with shoojit sircar again.” continuing with his power run, he’s excited about his upcoming web series powerplay produced by farhan akhtar and ritesh sidhwani, which will see angad opposite richa chadda. “the year 2016 was a great year and i wish 2017 is better,” he says. we wish the same as well.
