the lakefront trail in lincoln park and downtown chicago was closed friday afternoon as strong north winds kicked up waves as high as 14 feet on lake michigan.the chicago park district decided to close the trail at north, oak and ohio streets until saturday morning after the national weather service issued a lakefront flood advisory until 4 a.m. for cook county and lake and porter counties in indiana.the weather service said a "storm surge" could raise lake levels by 2 feet, and the wind would cause waves of 8 to 14 feet."if traveling along the lakefront trail, please exercise caution," the park district said.lake michigan levels are 11 inches higher than a year ago, which led the weather service to include the warning about the storm surge. that happens when strong north winds push the lake’s water south toward northeast illinois and northwest indiana, according to stephen rodriguez, a meteorologist with the weather service’s chicago area office.also a concern are the lower levels of ice along the lakefront. “the lack of ice cover is bringing up higher waves,” he said.the surge led the columbia yacht club to close the permanently docked yacht that serves as its headquarters near the mouth of the chicago river.“due to severe wind and fast rising waters, the club ship will be closed to all members and staff today, friday, january 12,” the club said in a note to members. “no one is permitted to board the ship for safety reasons as the ramps are elevated to pro...
