kane county state's attorney joseph mcmahon said he has eliminated his office's victims' rights unit because a state agency did not approve a grant request intended for the services."the loss of the grant means i don't have a dedicated victims' rights unit to provide support and sometimes literally walk with and sit with family members who have lost a loved one to murder or other incredibly violent crimes," he said.mcmahon said the kane county state's attorney's office for years has relied on funding for the unit that is administered through the illinois criminal justice information authority.the authority distributes federal funds it receives through the office for victims of crime through the u.s. department of justice.mcmahon said his office applied for a $104,368 grant for three full-time victims' rights advocates to provide services for victims of violent crime. since it is a matching grant, kane county would have contributed $59,982.mcmahon said his office was notified in december that the grant application for fiscal year 2018 was rejected."we received no explanation," mcmahon said.he said his office has filed an appeal with the illinois criminal justice information authority. his office is also in the process of writing letters to each state lawmaker in springfield that represents kane county to ask for their assistance in identifying any new funds for the unit.mcmahon said he's also had preliminary discussions at the county level. however, funding at the...
