another year, another riot fest, the music festival for grownups and the bands they loved as youngsters.there is one fewer stage this year, from six to five, and the kind of weather that makes you think the event organizers made a deal with the punk devil. temperatures are hovering in the mid-80s, with plenty of sunshine and fest denizens who seem to believe that the use of sunscreen just isn’t punk.there are carnival rides and stuntwomen zipping along wires, all part of a festival that is also evincing some complexities. there is much more branding this year, punctuated by the irony of having vip cabanas named after punk bands such as black flag.kids lounge in the shade under a vodka-badged tent, and roving beer vendors ply dos equis as if it is a day at the ballpark.the layout is slightly different this year, but the relaxed riot fest vibe remains, a delightful change of pace from the marauding hordes of oft-inebriated youth at lollapalooza. here, people say, “excuse me,” as they sidle past, and the fest layout makes the trip from the nearest to the farthest stage about a five-minute jaunt.there are plenty of good tunes too, even if the overall lineup quality doesn’t approach the majesty of 2016’s action-packed roster. here are some moments so far from this year’s festival:2:15 p.m.: liars were big, loug and snotty, pulsating with the kind of overblown, rhythm-heavy exuberance that brought a heretofore stanky sonic day to life. frontman angus andrew decided, in ...
